Reefbreeders Value Fixture on a 40 breeder???

Hello All,

I know a few people on here use the Chinese 120w fixtures and wanted to hear if you guys think one fixture would cover a 40 breeder. I would go with the 120 degree optics for the best spread.

It would be perfect for a 40. I have the same fixture over a JBJ28....cranked down to about 50% on the pots.

I glanced over on the ReefBreeders forum on RC to see if there were any reccomendations and the only ones I could find were ones stating that the Photon24 (the one I have) would do. I would contact Logan from ReefBreeders directly and he's usually good at responding pretty quickly.

Note that my light will raise as I finish adding water so the spread will be a little more that whats seen in those pics.

I will also add that removing the 90 degree optics is just the same as having 120 optics. With that said, I would get 90. Or if you want, order 90 with 120 around the outside.

Unfortunately only the value fixture is in the budget right now. Was hoping someone would have the value fixture with no optics and know if the spread is good enough for a 36 inch tank. Thanks tho, Sirfragsalot

I have two of them over a 40b frag tank, which is overkill. one would definitely be enough for a 40b with 90 degree optics at 12" above the water line.

That is what I wanted to hear! Would there by a reason I should not go with no optics and have it lower. I would prefer the light to be lower.....

light spill, if that doesn't bother you. go for no optics. 40b is shallow so you will still achieve great par all around.

If we remember the Pythagorean theorem, and if I’m correct about a 40B being 17-18 inches wide, at 8 ½ to 9 inches above the lip of the tank you have full coverage (and that’s at the top edge of the tank.)……And that is on the center LEDs only. The ones closer to the edge of the fixture are now spilling over.


Bottom line, you’ll be fine with 90 degrees. You won’t need to take them off. If you’re in the area, you’re welcome to look at mine. I have 90 degree optics on the Reefbreeder and 120 degree (no optics), on the Apollo's I have.

Mike, now you’re making fun of the colorblind kid. :grin: I’m red/green colorblind, so you’re asking the wrong person. I don’t know if it’s my colorblindness or just my regular preference, but my Apollo’s are 20K….very blue….and that’s what I like. I don’t know the Kelvin of the Reefbreeder, but it’s not as blue, and listed as full spectrum….has reds, greens, (I think violet), and blue and white LEDs.

overall color is dependent on how you set the individual channels, i have mine close to 14k, if not alittle bluer. colors on the corals pop! These fixtures are really the greatest bang for the buck if you're on a budget.

Full spectrum are wasted on you lol. I like the Apollos but the lights but the Reef breeders have me interested. I need to find someone down that has them so I can see them in person.

Thanks Paul, I was worried about the 36 inches long. Did not want the ends to be dark. Guess I will order the value with the 90 degrees and go from there.
