scraping a new2me used tank

Today I picked up a used 120g. Man there is so much crap caked on the glass and overflows. What's the best way to clean? Die grinder and a scotchbrite or would that scratch it (it's glass)? Looks like it's been caked on for a year+.

Vinegar

Vinegar is a weak acid.  Soak in vinegar will loosen up / dissolve all that caked on salt and dead coraline.

Die grinder....no way! lol

The razorblade will work, but be careful. When I bought my tank used it was absolutely covered on all 4 sides with thick Coraline. I had to chisel it away with water and a razorblade, but I still feel that some of the scratches left behind are from my handy work.

If I had to do it again, and I didn't have 3 buckets of LR and another 5 of water I would take the time and soak the tank in vinegar for a few days. Or, I would have just cleaned the sides and front and left the back wall intact.

Enjoy the new tanks!!

Thanks.

W/ the vinegar, if I fill the tank with fresh tap water, how much vinegar would I have to put in? don't tell me 120 :D

I’d buy a couple of gallons and soak full concentration (which I believe is only 5%). Do this by leaning the tank and painting the vinegar over the incrusted areas every so often. It will loosen the stuff up where it can be easily wiped off or scraped off. Wear rubber gloves…it is an acid.

when I got my used 120RR, I used a spray bottle with vinegar water, and a window scraper w/ razor blade (home depot, hardware store..). Soaked the spots to lossen I went very slowly & took my time. Good luck :)

I have it in the back of the truck now. I'm going to put a few gals of vinegar in it and drive to a self-service car wash. Figure the high pressure "rinse" water outta do the trick with the vinegar.
