Solar Electric

As I posted in October I installed Solar electric on my home and I would like to report the results being it is almost 100 degrees here in NY today.
I can access my electric bills for a year and I am happy to say that I have been saving about $110.00 a month in electric costs.
My bill this month which has been the hottest August on record is only $125.00. Last year it was $260.00.
That is with 3 ACs running almost continuosely and my reef with 300 watts of MH lights and five pumps.
On average I have saved $1,320.00 this year on power costs.
I am very happy about this.
And on Long Island we pay some of the highest rates for power in the country.
I also just finished installing my new
high efficiency boiler which is 96% efficient.
This is also supposed to save me over $1,000.00 a year in heating. I removed my 50 year old 1000 pound oil burner and installed one of these new energy efficient gas units. The thing is so small it hangs on a wall which is surprising being I have 3 zones and here in NY it gets down to zero degrees.
New York is one of the few places in the worls with a 100 degree difference in temperature between summer and winter.

The new boiler is so efficient that there is no chimeney. You are not allowed to vent the thing into a chimeny because it doesn't make enough waste heat to rise up a chimney. You have to vent it outside with plastic pipe. All of the heat goes into the radiators.
There is an outside sensor that tells the boiler how much heat to generate. If it just needs a little heat, the burner just makes a small flame and the radiators just get warm. On an old system, the boiler only has one speed, high. So even if you need to bring up the temp 2 degrees, the boiled has to go on full force and heat the hell out of everything. This thing has brains.
Of course I didn't try it out in the winter yet

Now all I need is an electric car and boat and I will be set.

No but same efficiency same rebate and about a thousand less. I bought a Crown high efficiency boiler. I will also get a rebate on that and a tax break so it should be just about free.
The Government is all screwed up now and I don't think they even know how much they are giving away on rebates and tax breaks. They all want to look good and especially Green so it pays to do this stuff before the country goes bankrupt :-[

Thanks for the electric update. I keep saying that after MACNA when I'm not working 20 hours a day on the task that I'll look into installing solar. This is fine incentive.

Smart man replacing the heating system in the summer. I took one of those old oil furnaces out of the basement for a lady the other day. It was a monster. The new one (HE also like yours ) looks ridiculously small compared to the old one. Had to promise the lady 10 times it was big enough for her house! Just curious... How many years will it take you to cover the cost of the solar unit? I had a customer that wanted it a while back but when he figured how long it would take to save what he was spending he bailed on the idea. I think the price is more reasonable now

Nick, I also removed my old cast iron boiler myself. I broke it up with a large sledge hammer and brought it to the scrap iron dealer. It was 1000 pounds. I got $30.00 in scrap ;D
Replacing it in the summer is the way to do it but I tested it yesterday when it was just about 100 degrees outside. So I had to run all the ACs because I wanted to make sure the radiators heated up.

The thing takes up about 18" of wall space compared to 7' for the old oil burner.
I am making a walk in closet with the space I saved.

I will re coup the investment of my solar electric in another year and a half. It only cost me $3,000.00 because I installed it myself. If you need to pay to get it installed it will take about 8 or 9 years to make back the money.
I have been selling the systems now as part of my consulting business and I have someone else install them. I don't do it anymore.
It's boating season ::)

Your getting your money back fast then that's good! And about boating season....... I hear that I'm slackin big time!!!

I completed the boiler installation yesterday and it is busy making hot water. The thing is very quiet, I can't even hear it and there is no waste heat. You could sit on the thing and it does not even get warm. Even the PVC vent pipe barely gets over room temperature. I am very happy with it so far. Now I have to get my rebate back ;D
