Spam

About a month ago I started getting spammed by reef related businesses that I've never done business with before. The latest one was today from catfishlighting.com. Anybody else?

Thankfully no. I do get plenty of Spam though. Do you post your email addy in messages? Might be spidering?

yea, I'm getting one as well but my email is hidden. I want to try to contact the guy and give some of my best advice. ;)

Something swampbottom is my current spammer.

The world of SPAM continues to grow and no matter what you do you will never win totally. A lot of my business is managing SPAM filters and appliances like that and you will find the spammers will always find a way around it somehow.

It's not really a big deal (for me anyway). I just bang away at the old delete key but I was just annoyed to suddenly get spammed by about five reef-related online retailers.

I don't get any related to fish or reef stuff, but if anyone needs to buy some viagra, I could sure point you in the right direction.... ;D

One day I opened email and got about 40 in a row, then nothing for a week, then a couple here and there... ::)

*girly giggle*

I get all sorts of different "male enhancement" spam all the time. I still find it hilarious since, while I'm not the girliest of girls, I definitely lack the equipment they're talking about.

I kind of separated my life between two emails. One's just for social clubs, online forums, myspace, and lj. So all the junk goes there. The other, I keep for friends, family, and business only. It's kept the spam in my actual mailbox done to just about nothing.

similar to kathain - i have several email accts - one for this forum and then one that goes on the resume and then one just for ebay/amazon/junk etc.

It doesn't hurt to be careful on for sale / trade boards and not post an email address. If you absolutely have to - it's best to write it out...like John (dot) Doe (at) Domain (dot) com. A human can understand that - but a trawler/bot searching for specific strings won't.

Yeah, you definitely want to be careful posting email address in a text field that is viewable to the public...

Craigslist etc like Phil519 was saying. There are 'bots' or scripts that people can run on pages and they pick them out and then they harvest your info like that.

Another thing I've seen, and often wondered about, is when you sell something on say Craigslist... and someone contacts you, and you respond and never hear from them again... I always wonder if that's someone harvesting emails. I'm careful about who I reply to because until you reply...your email is unknown.

Alot of times they ask very simple question...very vague "This still available" or "Where are you at" Wonder if they're harvesting...

Greg - thought just passed thru my head and I was wondering if you had downloaded anything unusual lately? It's possible some spyware was placed on your pc- and based on your surfing habits they were able to send reef specific spam. Just a thought.
