T5 Questions

its all good ed, i too would like to see some PAR ratings/testing/comparison of the eleventy billion combinations of T5 lighting.

Ed,
All I'm trying to do is help people understand, ice cap and SLS are both good company's, the major difference is the ballasts, believe it or not Current USA isn't all that bad either. I for one do not like overdriving of bulbs, it really defeats the purpose of going with T5's, they do generate more heat which in turn shortens the life of the bulbs and uses more electric. Heat= more electric usage, I'm not saying you can't or shouldn't just think about what you want to accomplish and choose whats best for you.

Also keep in mind that just cause a bulb looks brighter doesn't mean it has better par, I'll give you an example: using a Ice cap ballast a SE 175w XM 10K bulb has a ppfd of 70 and looks bright, the Iwasaki SE 175w 15K bulb has a ppfd of 86 and looks dim compared to the XM but has better par.

We had a discussion awhile ago about T5 bulbs and you told me about a web site that had the par read outs for all T5's just like Sanjay has for MH's but you never posted it, if you can find it please post it for all to see.

and Ed
if you ever want to talk about lighting you know where I am ;)

Jon, I'm sure a DSB will help some, but I personally wouldn't use 6" of sand.

What's wrong with a 6" sandbed? I'm gonna make my next build have one just so I can keep a blue spot jawfish happy ;D

nothing is wrong with a 6" sandbed, personally i don't like looking at a sand line that far up plus in a 210 that's like 400-600 lbs of sand depending on the kind. not something i can afford right now.

As Ed already said, there's nothing wrong with it, but I personally don't like it either.

"Sandbed" is another discussion that brings out the best in people. ;D

Sorry was just being facetious. Did not mean to hijack thread. I don't like 6" sandbed either otherwise I would've had a jawfish already.

you can always set the tank deeper into the stand so it looks like you have a one or 2 inch sand bed, but really its 6 :D

how long is your tank? Icecap sells pre-wired retro fit kits that are pretty much plug and play all you have to do is screw them in and install the bulbs. you still need fans to cool them but that's pretty easy.
