taking out brace soon or attemp

Hey I believe I talked to you before about this but I forget. I have a 150 gallon reef tank full of coral and rock. The only problem is that the sump is to small for the tank. I power went off yesterday then I had flooding thank god I was home. I bought a bigger sump and a Iwaki Pump Japanese Motor 55 RLT for a good price from someone on the site. The only problem is that the sump will never fit in the tank stand doors. I'm scared to hit out the door plank. I guess I can brass it but that's a lot of pressure not sure if the stand will be structurally sound again. any impute will be help full thanks bill

Here’s my guess:

If it is a store bought stand, I would be willing to bet that the support between the two doors is an integral structural component of the stand. These stands are typically ¾ inch plywood face frames that I would guess could not support that weight over a six foot span without the center support.

If it’s a homemade stand, then it depends upon the construction. The BEAST that they show on RC for a six foot tank includes 2 x 6 studs spanning the length of the tank. No center support is needed using this type of construction.

yeah it was a store bought stand . there are three dorrs on the tank amd two braces that the doors are on . I.m not really sure what to do. I might have to break down the tank if I can not figure it out.

never thought of that i guess the side wood is for show or soemthing I'll have to take alook. I do not want to rip down the tank but how things are goign i'm scared to leave the house

if possible you could take out half the water and attemp it ... or look on melevs reef site and see how they used 2x4 supports when they took a center brace out... it can be done..

RC had a nice post on how to take out the side, as previoulsy suggested, and slide the new sump in.

I am not familiar with the thread on RC regarding removal of the side. I will tell you that the side does offer support to the tank, albeit only 18 – 24 inches. More critical is that the sides keep the front and back walls perpendicular. Removing the side could be a tricky venture as well. If not held perpendicular, the front and back walls, with all that weight above, will want to move forward or backward. If you do this, I would come up with some way to support he front and back walls from going out of perpendicular.

Do you have a basement below the tank? If you do, how about putting the sump in the basement and run a couple pipes through the floor?

On mervs reef, he took out the center brace by building a temporary contraption out of 2x4s... it seemed really easy. I'll try to find the link.
