tank makeover

I am moving next month and want to start getting my tank going. I got it six mo.s ago but was going to just store it. Well I threw it together just to get it running and now I want to start over right.
Just llooking for some ideas I have a 46 gal bowfront with a 36" power compact light strip two bulbs two maxi jet 900. a seaclone protein skimmer and a cascade 500 canister filter. I have 40 lbs of coral bone and 20 lbs live sand in the tank with a lawn mower blenny, clarki clown, dominoe damsel and yellow tail damsel.
I want to get live rock and would like to start trying to do coral but am a little unsure what equipment I should buy.
I hear I should just get new live sand and don't use the old stuff but I am not sure and as I heard before just get the right stuff the first time lighting exc.
any help would be great thanks.

yo dave.. I'm no pro.. but heres my input.. for right now, don't worry about the lights. Since you don't have any coral in there yet.. get the lights when you're ready for corals.

I would say get live rock from bernie at seatrade like we discussed.. it should have good life on it and help with corraline growth and biological filtration.. but you've been running the reef bones, so i'm not sure if its a good idea to keep all of it and skip the lr.. or cure it separately and slowly replace some or all of it? Beats me.. heh..

decisions to be made include will you be doing a sump.. or not?

I'm going without a sump on my 46 bow and will be running a hot skimmer and a hot refugium. You have overflow options as well for a sump.

Hey Dave,

I would just start over if you are totally unhappy with your system as it is. Try and get a sump, the more water volume the better. If you want to do you're lighting right, you should really look into getting some Halides w/ T-5 or VHO supplement. Look in the sale forums @ Reef Central there is usually some good deals on there. I know you have heard it a thousand times...but exercise patience, it will really pay off. If you plan to do it correctly it will take time, so don't rush anything and ask as many questions as possible!  ;D

Good luck and have fun!!
