Test Kits - Go Bad?

They typically have expiration dates on them. I have some that expire in '09.

Yes test kits do go bad. While some do put expiration dates on them, many do not.

It's been my experience that the test kits most likely to go bad are the ones that test for nitrate, nitrite and phosphate, although any kit can go bad in time.

Oe dead give away is that the color in the test tube looks off, for example if the color should be pink and the color looks browish pink, you can be sure the test kit has "seen better days".

Make sure your results make sense. If you get a reading that's way too good or way too bad, retest with a new test kit.

I have also seen a few examples where one brand of test kit doesn't seem to work well with a particular brand of salt. Again, if it seems way off, try again with a different brand test kit.

Don't take any test jt as "gospel".
