Upgrading to 140 Gal need Help/advice

OK I have purchased a 140 Gal tank and I am undertaking an upgrade from a 55 Gal. I have a few questions and worries so any advice will be gladly acceptted.

I am wondering if I need to fill the new tank completely with new water and the new 100lbs of rock (fully Cured) or should I use all of the existing water and add it to the new tank with the new water, essentially a large water change.

I am so confuse

Thanks in advance

What animals do you have in the tank now? If you have a stocked tank I'd probably go the big water change route to minimize the impact on fish and corals. If you only had a few very hardy fish then you could go either way (maybe with an acclimation to move from one system to the other if the parameters were way off).

I have a maroon clown with a BTA, a Blenny, a Flame Angel and one PJ Cardnial. Corals I have some shrooms and zoos plus a frogspawn, open brain and 2 Acros. In addition to a variety of shrimp and snails. I think I am leaning towards the lg water change options?

yes you need to go the water change route and also you can currently do water changes in your establiched tank and save that water so you would have more aged water. For instance if you had 100 gallons of water from water changes (50 from tank and 50 saved from water changes) , you would only need 40 gallons of new water (rough estimate. That's the route i would take. Good luck

Definitely use about 40G of old water in the new tank to help seed it with bacteria. You don't want to have to cycle it again!

Do you need to take the 55 down to start the 140?

I'm upgrading to a 180 from a 75. I'm planning on filling the 180 with new water cycled rock and sand. When the ammonia, nitrites and nitrates look acceptable, I'm going to do a series of water changes using new water on the 180 and using the discarded water from the 180 to do changes on the 75. In a sense acclimating the whole 75 to the 180 water.

No matter how you do it, you will get a mini cycle.

After the 75 moves to the 180, I have a 55 moving to the 75 and will continue the process.

Id like to add my 02...

id take everything from the old tank and move it to the new tank...

id have the balance of the needed water ready... salt mixed ... temp adjusted... etc...

id slowly add the the new water till the tank is full... maybe over a period of 8 hours
