Probably a dumb question. Should i take back the gravel siphon that i bought? i originally was going to buy crushed coral but got live sand. it's a 15" Marine brand i believe..

Keep it! You should always siphon your sand once in a while, IMO. You will only remove a bit of it and you can siphon off any gunk that accumulates on it!

I use mine all the time. It's always good to siphon up the crap before you do a water change, anyway! :)
