what is a good beginner camera?

hello everyone! I have been looking online have lately and appreciating the beautiful shots of tanks, fish, and corals. I am gaining a great interest in photography and want to get into this hobby. After i went to the meeting on sunday i saw everyone with their Nikon's and i was like OK thats it. i want to get into this. Now, i don't know anything about photography and cameras so any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you!! ;D

its not much the camera, but the lens, i think a good camera will be Nikon d50, but if you have the money you can go for a d80 or d200, or you can go in the canon way, and i think the canon is the rebel xti, i read good reviews about it, but like i said the lens is the most important part

kabal's right. the lenses make whar a dslr camera is. They are extremely versatile when it comes to taking pics whether for outdoors, indoors, tanks, scenic etc. You may very well spend more money onb the lenses than what you paid for the camera as you get hooked into it, just like this hobby.

Nikon and Canon are the two big players in this game. Nikon just came out with the D40, a younger sibling to the D50 which is about $500-600 (not bad for a dslr)

Canon 20Ds  are pretty cheap these days, and they are real workhorses, Great ISO 100-3600 and as far as lenses you should always have a prime with large aperture.... i bought a 35mm F2 ~250-300 new and it beats my 17-85 IS F4 ($650-700) in everyshot. Zooms are nice but if you want great colors and low distorsion go with a fast prime.

As far a Nikon vs Canon, its up to you I'm a Canon guy never been disappointed by Canon.

Some of my pics (not all from my 20D or 10D)

hey lithivm, thanks for the info but all that lingo u wrote i barely understand lol!!! thank you though and those pics are beautiful. im really liking the nikon d40.

Its nicely priced, check out the Canon 350D it has 8 Megapixels (bigger image, more detailed prints) its around the same price. The canon also seems to have a lower ISO 100 setting which that nikon doesn't.

Anyway if you have any questions just ask, I'm on my 24th digital camera since I started... (my previous addiction before SW) and I'v had the 20D since it came out and will not change it until it breaks.

Here are some good Photo sites:

Definitely its a great camera, and a better choice than the cheaper Nikon.
Its basically my 20D with a different case and one third of the price I paid for it when it came out.
One tip that I can give you try to buy lenses from the same manufator as your camera, I had ~3k in Sigma lenses that I ebayed and replaced with Canon because of quality issues.

Let me know what you end up doing.

sure will and thank you for the help. now i just got to save up a little more. but now that you showed me the 350d im leaning more towards that. and i will keep in mind the tip you told me about the lenses.

make sure u like the feel of the camera on ur hands, trust me on this one.
Nikon & canon are both great cameras, u will have a good camera no matter
wich one u go with.
dont forget to feel the camera :)
