What protien skimmer to buy

I need to upgrade my Protein skimmer. What I would like to do is get one now for my 45 gallon with a 15 gallon sump where I can hang it on sump.I am hoping to change over my 90 gallon tank within the next year and will be putting it on my 90 with a sump of maybe 30 gallons I can go up to $250 if I had to. I know there are a lot of different views on skimmers but would love you're opinion.

Coralife will work as a hong on skimmer, and does an OK job. You can also look at the Octopus skimmers, which I think are a tad bit better than the Coralife.

if you plan on upgrading your tank to a 90 gallon then i would highly recommend getting a skimmer capable of handling the 90 so that you don't have to buy another one in the future.

I agree, I would recommend the coralife 125(tanks upto 125) or the Turboflotor 1000 Multi (tanks upto 250) it may be overkill but it's a good skimmer when it comes to universal use.

yeah it's better to have a bigger skimmer than one that's for the exact size of your tank. i have a 210 and a skimmer that's rated up to 1000 gallons. i have a heavily stocked tank though so you might not need to go that drastic but i'm just saying that a skimmer rated for up to 90 gallons is not what you want to shoot for. i would go for something rated around 150 at the minimum depending on how many fish you plan on getting.

Just don't waste your money on a prizm skimmer. I still have two from my new to the hobby days that never worked properly and were a pain to adjust daily.

When I get a skimmer I will get one for 125 gallons. Right now I can't hang it onto my main tank but can hob of sump when it's done. Sounds like corallife seems to be favored
On my tank now I only have 4 fish don't know about down the line when i go with the 90 I am looking more towards corals though.
Thanks Kevin

I went to check out a potential tank last week that had been for sale on craigslist, the guy had a 90 gallon tank with just a few powerheads, a small CPR hang on refuge, & a hang on prizm skimmer, he had tons of live rock & a DSB filled with copepods and all kinds of life, tons of corals, fish, stars, everything looked fantastic, he stated to me that all he does is top off water directly to the tank when it's needed and hasn't done a water change in months

I'm not trying to say anyone should or shouldn't buy a skimmer here, in fact in a few weeks, I'll be looking to spend close to $300 on one, I just don't really get how a system like that can flourish that well without the "proper" equipment that we're all told we need

did you decide on a protein skimmer yet ? I have a ETSS reef devils . it works pretty good. Ive also heard that reef creations MR series is good. http://www.myreefcreations.com/psstandard.htm

I have a MRC-2 skimmer (my reef creations) and by fare the best I have used in over 14 years.
Look into getting a MRC-1. They are upgradable.

I have always been very please with the AquaC Remora (hang on) and Urchin (sump). I see a lot of people commenting on the Coralife SuperSkimmer, which I dont have personal experience with, but I definately like what the AquaCs have to offer.

1. Sleek black. Matches with a black background.

2. Pumps...you can use Maxijetts or Mags. (Or Rios if you feel adventurous)

3. Preskimmer. Nice to not only hide a pump, heater and carbon but it really does increase the efficieny of the skimmer.

4. Collection cup drain option. I really like the fact that I only have to do weekly maintenance on the collection cup (clean the neck out) because all of the skimmate is collected in a bottle on the floor.

5. High resale. I dunno...I guess like buying anything you like to know that if there comes a time when the product no longer fits your needs you can get a lot of your money back.

One thing people have negative to say about the remora/urchin is the noise. The methods of producing foam is through a high pressure injection system which can be loud. I have managed to decrease this noise so much so that the hum from the fans in the light are louder than the skimmer. A large block of filter foam wedged around and above (NOT UNDER) the spray injector takes about 90% of the noise away.

I have used a Deltec MC500 (which is 2.5 times the cost of the Remora) and it did not do as good a job.

I have two prism hangons for cheap if your interested. I have the big size and the little one. I can say the smaller one worked great on a twenty gallon setup I tore down when I rearranged my living room. I think if they have a constant water level they are more consistent than the application I was trying to use them for.
