widest fish selection in nnj or cnj

We're finally ready to add some fish and small frags to our new tank. Now I know the best places to get coral is smcoolers or red sand, but who has the widest fish selection in the area? Only places I've been to are red sand and ogII but I also know there used to be a fish place on route 10 near whippany (don't know name).

Any suggestions? Looking for basics like small true percula, fire or yellow goby, cleaner shrimp, a few snails and maybe a small zoa (blue or orange).

Thx

I just came from AO and believe they have all on your list. Its best to call Will to make sure first. Hope this helps you . Dont forget your emebership card if your out shopping at sponsers.

Your subject line and what you are actually looking to get are different things altogether. :) What you are asking for is pretty much a staple for all LFS to have...although I don't know what a fire or yellow goby is - are you talking citron goby? yellow jawfish? yellow watchman goby? a firefish??

cleaner shrimp - as in the one with the white stripe on the back (amboinensis? or the blood-red kind debelius?

Widest selection as in - hard to find fish - I would go to AO everytime...especially after a fish shipment arrival - so I agree with qwik - a quick call to confirm what you want would help. if you want like yellow tail damsels then don't bother.

but if you are looking for a firefish/perc/shrimp - then hit any of the stores you mentioned already - one of them should have all of them. I haven't been to Red Sand in a while but I do know BOTH AqOb and OG II has percs, purple firefish, turbo snails, nassarius snails and frag of zoas.

Thanks. Appreciate the help. I'll continue to work on my communication and learning to better explain things. There is so much to learn it's really tough, but it is fun. Thanks.

Tropiquarium. AO has nice fish but nearly the amount of space, tanks, or livestock. This goes for corals as well.

No problem! See if you can grab a book on fishes - I personally love Robert Fenner's "the conscientious marine aquarist"...great tips on fish (not as expansive though if you want coral/invert advice).

Oh and no matter what you do - don't feel pressured to have to walk out the store with a fish. If you have any doubt on the health of the fish (swimming, how does it react to other fish, is it listless, etc.) - don't buy it! Also - if the fish that YOU wanted - is not available - don't feel like you have to buy a different fish to make up for it (e.g. you walk in for a royal gramma, but walk out with a bi-color pseudochromis). The pseudos are gorgeous fish but in my opinion they have the nastiest temperament for that size fish I have ever seen.

Good luck - the fun is only just beginning!

I like AO and the two you mentioned. I think their personalized service and their commitment to try to do the right thing makes them a better choice then the larger LFS on 35.

That is not a true statement. I like both stores and have no affiliation with either, but if you have any knowledge of corals or fish, get in a conversation with either of the two people at the "store on 35" and report back on the forum your true assessment. I like Will at AO, but don't' make false claims for your own personal reasons. The purpose of this form is to give information to the members in order to help them.

Hmm do you honestly think that I have not been there? It is my opinion and they sell wild caught bangaii cardinalfish which is a pet peive of mine. We as hobbiest are going to be directly blamed for the demise of this fish.

Why don't you report back to me when Trop agrees not to sell wild caught bangaii cardinal fish.

As far as the personal service side of things well I can honestly say I have gotten better personal service from the three other stores. Red Sand, OGII and AO.

It was all in my opinion as I stated. I do believe I am allowed to have an opinion please don't say it isn't true because as I stated it is entirely true.

We havent sold wild bangaiis in quite some time. We stopped selling them when we and "the world" became aware of their dire situation. I consider myself to be very concerned with sustainability issues. So please do not make false statements such as that.

Thanks Ken, we certainly appreciate your business and support.

Go back to the top of thread and read what the thread subject is. It was not "Stores that I do not like because they sell a fish that I think they should not sell". By the way, did they tell you that it wasn't wild caught and sold it as such? Then you could be pissed, but then again it still has nothing to do with what the thread is about. Actually the thread has nothing to with the people or service of the stores. It has to do with "widest fish selection in nnj or cnj"

Gaining knowledge of the fish and corals really should be the responsibility of the forum as there are many people here that have real life experience with these tank inhabitants and can answer these questions so that you can walk into a store with a large selection, see fish/inverts and know what can or cannot go into THEIR tank. The only question then for the store personnel is how long have you had it, and is it eating?

This thread has gone way beyond the intent of the OP.

junk - if you need more info on an LFS - please feel free to scan thru the review section or retailer experiences. Or start a new thread. Apologies for having to lock this one.
