They twist apart. I have had a hard time with mine in the past but it will come apart eventually. Just takes some elbow grease.

the little guy has color and not in pieces would you put him back in the sump in a ventilated basket

If it's not torn up to bad it's definitly worth a shot putting it in the sump.
