xenia not opening

It's not anecdotal. Lugol's is needed (or at least Iodine that it contains). I also know it absorbs nitrates (how much I don't know). I get the feeling xenia likes "dirty" water and that is why it is prone to crashes. It starts off growing very fast wherever I put it and then slows down quite a lot. I don't think pH affects pulsing. It pulses to collect particulates in the water. I notice that if I add stuff (plankton for example), it does pulse a lot more. It does prefer low to medium flow to get the ideal pulse.

I'm not sure if I agree because you are only factoring the nutrients and not lighting. I have a 20L that has softies and PC lighting. The other softies grow well but xenia doesn't grow in this tank. This is the bastard tank and doesn't get tested but I'm sure there are nitrates in there. When I moved this coral under mh lighting it took off, but it did grow better when the live rock was new and there was less sps in the tank. I think it is more prominent in lagoons rather than on the purer waters of the reef crest. I also think I remember reading about polluted waters where it thrived. I never dosed iodine when it was growing at such a rapid rate and there weren't any nitrates in that tank either. I also had high flow so it whipped more than pulsed. There are so many variables to consider and I believe when you are experiencing success it has a lot to do with the combination of many factors rather than an isolated variable.
