Can't you just hear Barry White?

happy Hallmark - err, uh valentines day (or as my kids say with all the conviction in the world "balloon times" day. They're 5. They thought the anemone was communicating with them about balloons. It took a while to figure that one out.

since this has a limited shelf life of roughly 24 hours I figured I'd knock it back up top - sort of like a broken clock that's always right twice a day, this picture works on exactly one day a year....

You should have saved that pic for Feb. POTM! Nice one Dave!

I thought POTM was picked from a post and nominated by someone. I didn't think I was supposed to "save" for that. Anyway just thought it was funny the the nem decided it wanted to be relevant. :)

Yeah, kind of a silly rule for POTM, could lower the overall quality of shots posted to the site, since you gotta hang on to the good ones. I'm sure there is some logic for it, it's different from other clubs so I don't know what it is.

Hey. Isn't George on the BoD? I'd think maybe he has the kind of pull to get that done.

I believe the general rule is that the pic cannot be previously posted on any local forum (not sure exactly why this is included but it is part of the rules. I think it has something to do with keeping the anonymity aspect so people vote for a pic instead of a person.) In fact, let me dig up the list of rules:

NJRC Photo of the Month Contest
It's time for NJRC's photo of the month! The winner gets their picture posted on the homepage of NJRC for the month and $20 Visa/Master Gift Card!

The Rules:

1. Pictures must be hobby related (no pictures of your pet hamsters)
2. You must submit your own work (if you like someone else's pic, give them the nudge to submit it)
3. Submissions will be taken until one week of month's end
4. Pictures will be displayed anonymously with an anonymous poll for a period of approximately 1 week directly prior to month's end (only paid NJRC members will be able to vote - one vote per poll)
5. The winning pic will then be posted on the homepage of NJRC
6. In the event of a tie, a random winner will be chosen by NJRC admins/mods
7. The pictures should be photos that have not been previously posted on any local forum
8. No full tank shots, pictures must be of a single focal point or unique perspective
9. The pictures must be free of any borders, graphics, signatures, watermarks or date/time information.
10. Each member can only submit 2 Pics per poll.

Pictures may have to be sized down when posted on the site due to size limitations, we'll take care of that on the admin side of things should the need arise.

Submit your photo, along with a brief description, by emailing them to Photos@njreefers.org. Please put POTM - USERNAME in the subject. The description will be used on the home page. It should include any special technique used, something about the subject of the photo, the camera/lense used, what post production work, if any was done (cropping, color correction, sharpening, layering ....), and anything anectdotal that you'd like to tell.

3/15/2012 - Edited to revise rules & instructions, please review before submitting any other POTM entries!

It's Rule #7. Rule #10 was made bold by David when he updated the rules to show the changes.

oh well, I just thought it was cool - and seemed appropriate for valentine's day more than saving it for something down the road. Besides, I think I remember seeing something from Sunny a week or 2 ago saying that the POTM hadn't changed since last summer. I guess there'd be little or no reason to hang on to something unless it could have been submitted in advance to be the Feb POTM and this hadn't happened too much earlier - it was a few days before it posted so, like I said, it was more just because I thought it was cool - never gave submitting it a thought. That said, my wife put it on facebook and I emailed it to my girls' kindergarten teacher and overwhelmingly I was told I should submit it "somewhere" - no one seems to know where that "somewhere" is though. I guess this would have/should have been the place. Maybe it will happen again for next year...

Don't get me wrong Dave. I think it's a cool pic and glad you shared it with us. I just think that if it was saved for the POTM, it probably would have won. ;)

Maybe I should be careful not to let on too much about me (but who else is reading this anyway at this point :) ) but Rule 7 reads: The pictures should be photos that have not been previously posted on any local forum
As you see, it says “should” and not “shall” or “must” so it’s more of a recommendation and not a requirement -- it leaves wiggle room for David to use his discretion and make exceptions under certain circumstances…

Haha, yea, I already knew about you Dave and you're probably right. I don't think the people who created those rules were lawyers though... and I certainly am not. ;) Is there really a legal difference between should and shall? They both sound like the same thing to me.

As you said, it's up to the PoTM Committee to decide either way, so I guess it's up to their interpretation. I'll mention this and see if we can ammend it the proper terminology.
