Good morning guys. Could use some expert reef octopus skimmer help from the forum.

I have an Sro 5000sss plumbed into my system Since August. I cannot get this thing tuned.

I just adjusted the hieght of my skimmer to 6 7/8 ( after realizing that my water sits about an inch higher than my baffle at 15" instead my set baffle hieght of 14). It seem to be running fine and I lost power for a min and when it came back on it started going nuts and overflowing. I then let sit over night and turned it on this morning and it's still overflowing. Can someone please give me any advise. I'm about to go nuts. I have very high nutrients ( cheato ball grows from a fistful to a jungle in a week) because of this and really need to get this fixed.

I did speak to coralvue and they said turn up the value to add more water. But that's not possible when I have the gate valve off and it's still overflowing!!!!

By "off" do you mean your gate valve is closed? I don't have a RO, but I believe they all work the same, the more I close my water discharge (gate valve), the higher the water gets in my reaction chamber, and if too high it will begin to overflow into the cup.

Do i have this concept wrong!!!! I thought if i closed the gate it would drop the water level..... in the chamber. So should i turn the gate valve all the way on,,, and then adjust it from their?

If you have the gate valve closed, you're not letting the water that enters the skimmer escape so it'll rise and overflow into the collection cup. Try opening it and see what happens.

You want to open the gate valve to lower the water level. I believe the gate valves on the octopus skimmers are labeled on (closed) and off (open). I'll have to check mine when I get home but I'm pretty sure that's how it is.

Jim said it.....start opening the gate valve to lower the bubble height in the skimmer body. I actually start from the other end.....I open the gate valve all the way and slowly start to close it.

EDIT TO ADD: Is there an echo in here! I guess we were all typing at the same time. I'm guessing Edwin gets the picture, hearing it four times over.

Okay... if off is open.... then it is completely open as we speak and still going nuts....

Valve is just like the valve on the side of your house to water the grass turn right and it closes the valve turn left to open. Turn left and open all the way and go from there.

That valve restricts the flow of water back into your sump. When fully open, the bubble column should be minimal….all the water is passing through the skimmer too fast. As you close the valve, it holds more water in the skimmer body, raising the bubble column.

I’m not getting involved in the “on” and “off” discussion….let’s keep it to open and closed.

The other thought….could you have a snail or something else blocking this opening???

Put your finger in the valve as you are moving the dial. If the piece in there is moving up you are opening the valve if down you are closing it. Open it all the way let it sit for a little while and slowly adjust from there. Wait a bit between adjustments
