Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
If you can, try the PADI beginner dive course in Grand Cayman.
You will see some spectacular corals, 6" cleaner shrimp and many hogfish, grammas, butterfly and angelfish. ;)

You can probably go as low as 600 GPH but check manufacturer for optimum flow rate.
The Prime Tower Chiller that I use is 1/3HP and pump flow rates go from 600-900 GPH.
Consider that the high silica in the "play sand" with other contaminates as the source of the problem. Also you may have PO4 in the sand bed that are not being detected by your test kit. I think that phosphate removers are good, but weekly 10% water changes and wet skimming will reduce the...
You are reducing flow thru the carbon if it is in a bag inside of the reactor.
I would rince the carbon in a mesh bag to reduce particles, then pour rinced carbon into reactor.

I totally agree that we must protect these fish.
If we overfish this area we will then see tangs or pacific angelfish costing more than $1000.00 dollars. :o
It would be selfish of reef hobbyists to want price of livestock preserved over the unnecessary extinction of a species.

Not to hijack this thread. ;)
What about "cooking LR" versus "curing".
I know that it can take much longer to cook LR but there are supposed to be better long term benefits.
What about problems that occur after power outage?? ???
H2S that builds up in the denitrator could cause majors problems in your tank when power returns??
Just a thought... 8)
In my limited experience I have used peppermint shrimp with good success in a reef tank. ;) They were eventually eaten by my Marine Betta! ::)
A Copperbanded Butterfly in FOWLR tank that scarfed down all the aptasia, then stopped eating! :'(
So you can try the biological approach with...
I use Kent Marine Reactor with minijet pump. ;)
Before you get reactor check PO4, NO3 levels. ???
It may be due to high NO3(nitrates), this is better treated with weekly water changes.
Are you using RO/DI water in your tank??
The high contaminents in tap water could be a problem.

I have a 75 gal Oceanic for 15 years w/o problems. :D
Converted from African Chiclids to Salt 4 years ago.
Only reason I am selling it is that my lovely spouse gave me a 90 gal RR for Christmas. ;D

Ditto on welcome Tom. ;D
Octopus skimmers are a good choice as well.
MRC is a good skimmer but the company owner may be in some legal trouble.
All the skimmers you mentioned are good, the final decision will come down to price and ease of operation. As a newbie you may not want to tweek a...
Eagle Reef Systems Moving Location
Spoke to Bob last week, he informed me that store will relocate to Route 22 West in February.
If anyone remembers the THE REEFS LFS location that is where Eagle Reefs will be moving to.

Sump, live rock and protein skimmer is current filtration system of choice for reef tanks.
Canister filters tend to accumulate nitrates, bad for even the hardiest corals.
If your maintenance is weekly you may be able to get away with current set up. I did it for first year of saltwater tank but...
Are you having problems with microbubbles in tank?? ???
If skimmer is working well in your system tweeking it may not be worth the time/effort.
