Yeah the magnesium, which makes up a large part of the mix, is probably what generates the heat. When I said salt I meant salt mix.

Water first due to the exothermic reaction. It's like the add acid to water not water to acid thing. Take a spoonful of salt and add a little water to it. See how much heat it puts out.
