I can tell you that 1/10th of a second after snapping that picture, the hog nearly latched onto the lens. It was feeding day, and I must have really ticked him off. Didn't know I could move that fast. :o
OMG, I'm so sorry to hear. I can't even imagine what you must feel like. I believe if that was to ever happen to me I'd throw the towel - out of pure devastation and despair. :(
Have you tested the water, or tried to figure out what happened?

Those are male guppies. Will try and add several females to keep those guys busy. ::) Additionally, guppy fry makes a good substitute food for the toads.

If you're talking about the soft-bodied ones with a single "fishing line", I wouldn't worry too much about them, as they should die off after a while.
