Just cut the piece off where the algae is growing on, as I agree with Mike, that hair algae won't grow on healthy tissue.

How many heads did the Duncans have? Don't jump the gun and toss it just yet. There may be a chance it'll grow back if not all of the heads were stung by the torch. Torches sure have a potent sting, don't they. :(

I agree with Jim on cleaning the skimmer without vinegar. I wipe mine down once a month with paper towels, and it has worked great for me thus far. It's easier to maintain all the equipment if you regularly clean them up. :)
