    Transfering to a new tank

If it's possible for you to do so, it is safer to establish a whole new sand bed, rather than try to transfer one. I had the advantage that my new tank was going in a different spot than the old one. I was able to set up and cycle in the new tank as it's own entity, then move everything over...

Ok with lights off for 3 days? Or do I really need a timer ... worried.

I've used standard plug-in timers to control lights on all my tanks for years, fresh and salt water. Never had a problem. But if you are nervous about possible fires, you can buy a GFCI Tap. This would plug into your electrical outlet and your timer would plug into it. (or you could just...

    Canopy versus open top

I wouldn't worry about the cat. I've had fish tanks and cats for 20 years. They like to look and I had one that would leap at the front glass on a low tank (those poor fish were traumatized forever, always swim in the back side of the tank now), but I've never had one show the slightest interest...

    Drip acclimation -- a discussion

After I saw that guys Fiji video showing corals sitting out of the water for hours every day, I thought: "Why do we spend hours messing with these things before putting them in the tank?" Mother nature hits em with one big wave....acclimation done.

    Foam Rock Wall

I looked into this last year when I was setting up my Cichlid tank, thinking about landscaping the back wall of the tank. In the end, I was unwilling to give up the water volume for it. (mainly I just chickened out) Anyway, many of the textured walls I saw were not great foam, but styrofoam...

    No wonder we can't win...

I had a 10 gallon quarantine tank set up in my basement for the last 3-4 months. I just recently moved all the stock from it into my main tank. I hadn't taken the quarantine tank down, but have completely ignored for the last month or so - nothing of value was in it. Yesterday, I started working...

Impact of Reflectors on T5 intensity

There is a very informative article in the April edition of Tropical Fish Hobbyist by James Fatherree. He wanted to see just what impact reflectors had on the intensity of T5 lighting making it down into the tank. He tested the light intensity with the reflectors blacked out with tape and then...

My DIY Canopy for 72 gallon Bowfront

First, I would like to say, This was one helluva a lot more work than I planned on!!! Maybe it would go faster for others, but I know I've got at least 40 hours in it. Second, the sizes I used work for me on MY tank. I can't guarantee your tank is just like mine, though it likely is. PLEASE...

How do you handle moving day?

I like the idea of taking water from the new tank and putting it into the old tank to balance chemistry. That seems like the easiest solution for me.

How do you handle moving day?

I currently have a 40 gallon reef setup with Live Rock, Sort corals, peppermint shrimp and assorted crabs/snails. I've set up, seeded and cured a 72 Bowfront to move all this into and it's now ready to go. But, what's the best way to go about making the transfer? Do I need to put all corals in a...

    Note To Self #2:

I thought you weren't supposed to put that salt back into your tank. I remember reading something about those solidified salts from evaporation having a heavier metal content.

    Seahorses

Seahorses are cute and all, but there's just so much effort involved with keeping them. They almost have to be kept by themselves, so you need time/room for a separate "seahorse" tank. They frequently won't eat anything but live foods. You either have to farm brine shrimp, or like some of the...

OOOPS!!!!!! I forgot to turn OFF .......

Done that, more than once. What's worse? Is when you're an hour away from home and the thought suddenly pops into your head, "I forgot to turn the RO off." From that day forward, I always set my 6 gallon jug down inside a 20 gallon plastic tote. It's not as good as a float valve, but it buys me...

Look, a Gem Tang is on sale.

For that price: 1. Ship it my a**. Somebody better be gettin' on a plane and hand delivering that sucker to me. 2. Life Insurance. A fish THAT expensive needs to qualify for a term life policy. When that puppy dies, it ain't goin in the toilet, it's getting a funeral.

    My First Ever Build

I've used that kind of poor man's bulkhead fitting before myself, but never where I didn't silicone the thing in place. You might as well glue it in. It's not like you need to be able to take it on/off once it's together. If you ever do, it's not that hard to cut the silicone loose.

NJRC Holiday Party! December 13th 2008

What's the schedule for this going to be? I see it's got a 5 hour slot like a meeting, but is there going to be like a planned time for eating, speaker, meeting, etc? My wife is thinking about coming with me, but she is not a reefer and 5 hours might be a bit much for her - so I'm just trying to...

    Upgrade from 40 to 72

The main reason I'm trying the algal scrubber is the claims that they handle LARGE bio-loads very well. I've read statements that turf algaes can be up to 100 times more efficient at removing Nitrate and Phosphate than other macroalgaes. Supposedly, well stocked tanks have run for years without...

    Upgrade from 40 to 72

Well,as you can see from the date I started this, this build has been a loonnng time in the making. In part due to time availability, in part due to indecision and in large part due to monetary limitations. Indecision was a big part: bare bottom vs sand vs plenum vs DSB, filtration methods...
