Old light bulbs will definitely increase algae growth. I found that out personally over the last few months. :( I also saw a post a few days ago by a guy wondering why he had an algae problem (he ran his lights 24/7 - yeah, that'll do it.)

While I think the best approach to dealing with Aiptasia is NAPALM, I was finally able to get the suckers out of my 40 with a Berghia Nudibranch. Absolutely fish sells them in Clifton for $30. They will die after all the Aip is gone, but it's a worthy sacrifice in my opinion.

While I do use a Jaubert plenum, it's set up using entirely aragonite sand - no crushed coral. It pretty much makes my tank automatic. Calcium and alkalinity maintain themselves. I don't do much other than run a skimmer and change the water.
