well, i finally kicked that dino problem. i kept the lights on a short cycle, fed once a week or less, didn't change the water except to vacuum out the dino, and added some biodigest every 2 weeks. i think i had a nitrate problem even though the tests said i was clean. i think that the dino in...
i do not have any plans or experience doing this, but i know that this site has great products
http://www.kjmagnetics.com/
i imagine that something like this would work best.

flow doesn't really seem to be an issue. i have 2 k2 and a k4 in a 55g and besides that the dino is growing on the powerheads...
for a CUC i have 2 emerald crabs, 12 blue leg hermits, 6 red leg hermits, 10 turbos, 15 or so nerite, 6 large nessarius, and i did have 10 or so ceriths but they all...
some more research has me now believing that i have a pretty serious dinoflagellates problem on my hands.
so far i have reduced my photoperiod from 8/10 to 7/10. i'll probably reduce it a little more when i get home (maybe 6/8). i have also given my skimmer an over haul to ensure maximum...
i realized earlier today that i have had my RO/DI filter for about 9 months now and i haven't changed any of the filters yet...
probably time for some new canister cartridges, huh?
my tank has developed a stringy green-ish brown-ish slime and it is starting to encroach on some of my smaller low flow corals (zoas).
what perplexes me is that my water quality has been great.
API test kit
no nitrates
no phosphates (that i can tell anyway, the test is hard to read)
maybe i...
hey Lance, why didn't you let me know you were having a problem?
I have a multimeter and a masters degree in electrical engineering, but no spare ballasts. :D
PM me if you are going to be around tonight, I should be available from around 5-9.
when i set up my 12g acrylic tank i sprayed the back with black krylon fusion. i think it looks great.
there were more than a few things that i wish i had the time to do to this tank when i set it up, but i was a little rushed to move it in the middle of December (snowing) and get everything...
i probably will eventually get a black background, but it is not a priority. besides, the longer they are up the saltier they get. i would like to create a shade for the overflow box and return hose though. because of the light/flow they receive they seem to get lots of growth.
i would...
the way that i do it is a grab 2 pieces of filter pad, but really any thick cloth will work, hold the u-pipe underwater filling it with water. Then you place the cloth over the openings and hold it on with your fingers. the seal doesn't need to be super tight because the water can't flow that...
there are cheaper ways to go to a larger tank, but it normally means slowing down, A LOT.
you could buy dry rock and let it seed itself over time.
you could buy used.
you would have to budget things and NOT buy livestock until you have all the environment you need to support them...
nice tank, very similar to mine!
i have 2 K2s in mine as well. might want to remove those chute things on the front of them, it makes their output very directional.
from your screen name i take it you drive a mitsu? i'm a wrx owner, but i won't hold it against you. :P
you said the tank is...
i have a 55 with 2 k2s. they are positioned at the top of the tank on opposite sides, one points down a slope of rocks and the other points along the surface.
it sounds like k4s might be a little too much, but i imagine it depends on the amount of rock work/exposed corals you have.
