Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
I had a exactly the same issue. The bottom line is the Mag-18 is not a pressure pump and the MR-2 is meant to run with a pressure pump, not a mag-18. Alot of people will tell you their skimmer works great, but what does that mean? I bought a Panworld PW-55 and had a whole new perspective on...
Didn't say all, said most. With IO, my barrell looked like Newsalt's photo after 1 week of mixing. With Crystal Seas it doesn't look that bad now and I haven't cleaned the barrell in close to six months. I have to admit, I did hope to find time to clean the barrell this weekend, but ran out of time.
I'll go with the odds and bet most of the responders use Instant Ocean. I had the same sediment in my mixing barrell for the entire 2 yeas I used IO. Since changing to Crystal Seas I have a fraction of the "build-up" that I had with IO. I have no experience with other salts, but it is definately...
Bottle trick didn't work for me... I took the rock he resided in out and did a very quick dip in RO/DI. The shrimp IMMEDIATELY came out. I quickly caught him and put in a seperate container with original salt water. There seemed to be no harm to the shrimp, rock, or other lifeforms on the rock...
If you subscribe to the belief that keeping an invert in a fishless system for a period long enough to break the MI cycle than theoretically you can eliminate "them". Due to the muliple stages of MI life cycle, "Them" could be most parasites and probably some bacterias. Also, if you subscribe to...
Not sure if the question was directed to me, but I'm using Crystal Seas. Replacement water tests about 10.4dKH. Ironically, testing of my display tank last night revealed Calcium at 420ppm and alkalinity at 5.8dKH. I dripp Kalk every night so I'm not sure why I'm seeing this drop periodically...
I had similar issues. Once was due to a faulty test kit, the second time the cause was unknown, but the fix was simple. I mixed 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda with a cup or 2 of RO/DI and added to a high flow part of the tank each day for a week. Problem solved.
Good luck
Well, my ATO is also on a timer, the same timer as my lights so it only comes on when I'm awake. Sort of a fail safe to avoid it sticking and running all night. Maybe his helps it to only top off once a day. I also add Kalk at night with an SP-3000 dosing pump. I'm surpirsed the Mag 5 is...
How frequently does your pump come on? I have a cheap Cap 2200 that pumps from the cellar to the tank on the first floor +/-10' once a day and it's been going for about a year with no issues.
I didn't read that article, but a brief search on any of the other reefkeeping websites will yield numerous articles on this topic. One thing to notice is that some feel adding vinegar to increase solubility may also result in the outbreak of nuisance algae. I can't comment on the truthfulness...
I QT EVERYTHING but I'm a little neurotic like that. One ich outbreak wiped out my entire tank, fish of course. How many times have you seen an lfs put a fish struggling with illness into their invert tank to keep it away from other fish? MI can tag along in or on the invert or in the small...
Strictly my opinion. Few lfs' follow strict QT that would control or minimize MI to any degree whatsoever. Some fish are less susceptible to succumbing to MI, but not much less likely to carry the parasite. Without eliminating it from ALL additions to the tank, those fish more likely to...
You should find a way to dose properly. First, you should mix kalk with water and let sit for 24 hours. Then pour off clear liquid and dump milky water at bottom(sediment). You can use an airline attached to a bag or bucket with a small airline valve to adjust a drip of the kalk water. You'll...
The methylene blue helps keep the fish calm, I think. The freshwater dip helps reduce the number of external parasites but does nothing to rid the fish of marine ich. The marine ich life cycle can be longer than 4 weeks. The treatement needs to last 4 weeks after any spots are seen and at least...
Thanks Bob, I've seen it before, but it was definately worth seeing again. I'm going to shoot for a little less flow than that, or divorce will be in the future.
Rob
I'm gonna jump on the bandwagon here... I would be happy to make the hour or so drive to help out a fellow reefer, and let my nearly 7 yr old son watch. More importantly it would give me a reason to continue on and finally visit Stan(aka smcooler). I don't think you'll have any problem finding...
As ridiculous as this may sound, it kind of sounds exactly like an illness that nearly wiped out my koi pond. I received about a dozen small koi from someone breaking down their pond. Several months after putting the new fish in my pond, they ALL came down with the exact same symptoms as your...
tgee, now that you mention it, I also read about the noise issue, but I also thought it sounded like isolated users not having the pump properly installed. The rust was a new one for me, but glad to hear it's being resolved.
Since the controller allows the flow to be reduced, I'm sure I can get...
Woops, left out a big piece of info. I plan to upgrade to 2 Vortech's soon which can be dialed down(according to the website). They would be overkill for my 65 gallon, but I hope to be upgrading to a much larger system near the end of the year.
