What problems did you hear about the Vortech's? So far the only negative I've read about was the price. I have a mix of Maxi-jet's and a Seiio in my 65 gallon and hate it even though I have pretty good flow. My current plan is to upgrade to 2 Vortech's soon.
I could be wrong, but wouldn't cucumbers also be more appropriate in larger tanks, say 125 or even more? The size of the sandbed being more important than the gallons of water of course. I'm pretty certain those of use with smaller tanks(like my 65 gallon) would probably suffice with a good...
Didn't know there was such a thing. I guess if I thought about it, I would have at least looked for one, but I found the idea on another reef site.
Greg, I just seperated the battery from the terminal and attached a wire to each terminal(on the alarm) and one wire to a terminal on the battery...
Did you build your stand? If so how did it come out, pics? I built mine out of 3/4" hardwood plywood and it solidly holds a 65 gallon. No need for 2X framing if done right.
Bill, not to sound like a wise guy, but my chiller has a discreet plug for a heater. I guess it's a built in control. The theremostat on the chiller decides whether heat or cooling is needed. No extra controls are necessary. The reason I mention is becuase I almost overlooked mine. Right now I...
FWIW, my pulsing xenia seemed to prefer moderate flow, not high and is doing well under medium to strong lighting. I am trying to control it's spreading by keeping it on a small rock in the middle of the sand bed away from all other rock. It spreads like a dandelion.
I do a FW dip for 30 min's with Methylene blue. Maintain proper temp & ph and watch closely. Then slowly dropped QT salinity to 1.009 for 6 weeks. Haven't seen MI or other parasites since.
Are you guys really that impressed? I'm sorry to be critical of your opinion, but I'm glad it wasn't more than 3 or 4 miles out of my way. I think I had more gallons of water in my parents house when I was a teenager(a little exaggeration). I might have more dry goods(not much of an...
I replaced my old(ish) unknown brand of 10K' with 2 Ushio 250W 10K's and thought they were a little on the stark white side. I replaced the 2 -96W PC's with the Current Sunpaq 420nm/480nm Dul Actinics which are basically 2 different blues and this helped alot. I'm still trying to decide if I...
Chaucer, is Aquatic Visions in East Hanover formerly Hanover Pet? I remember it from years ago to be quite good, but finally made it there today and boy was I dissappointed. Scratched that off my list.
Dover Pet is not far from where I grew up. As a kid I had 6 fresh and 1 saltwater tank in my...
Welcome to N. Jersey Steve!!! I've lived in N. NJ most of my life and have seen many aquarium stores come and go, and have even worked at a few.
To add a few to the list:
Reef Encounters in Hackensack is OK for basics. Fish selection is so so, coral selection is limited, inverts is limited as...
The Maxi-jet mods don't work with wavemakers either. At least not with those that shut the pump down completely. Restart causes lots of noise and sometimes problems. It also wears out the impellor. I'm saving and holding out for a pair of Vortechs.
Daniel,
I can't comment on either chiller, I haven't tried or seen either in action, but I bought the following CL-650 last year:

I'm happy with it so far. It's behind my chair in the living room and although it's loud enough that I know when it's...
Sorry this took so long... Came down with a terrible cold that I couldn't kick, then went to Vegas for a bit, then couldn't find my USB cable, finally couldn't remember which thread it was. Anyhow, let me see if I can explain this well enough.
I've plumbed the overflow from the tank directly...
Ok, this thing is rockin now. For the first year i only got a watery light green skimmate, now I can adjust to get any kind, watery or dark and dry. Pretty easy mod. PM me if you want details.
