how to take pictures of your corals

It must be a mistake. I think "native" ISO is your starting point. Cannon is ISO 100 and Nikon is ISO 200 ISO where you get the best quality and you slowly increase it until motion blur is eliminated and exposure is correct. Any settings above ISO 400 may start to introduce noise (grainy...

The 55 is going bye bye.

Good collection of frags here. Pete schooled me on the dip process and I think the little bit of bubble algae got removed. Now I am going to research the care of each. I think I correctly identified the green slimer btw - LOL. Love the birds nest too. May need some help with some ID's...

The 55 is going bye bye.

It was great to see everyone. Super friendly and happy to share. After driving one hour I arrived after most but there was plenty treasures to be had. A big thank you to everyone. Not only did you share your knowledge and steered me toward safe beginner corals but all chipped in and fragged...

55 Gallon RR - My First REEF Build

The jumbo turbo snails that I have were busy in the quarantine tank as their little babies were discovered today. The parents have since been moved to the main display.

55 Gallon RR - My First REEF Build

It appears the tank has finally cycled. I put the fish in a few days ago and today I did my tests before the 5gal water change and all Nitrates are down to zero. Fish look happy and the hair algae has slowed down. Installed the skimmer today also. Not much of a CUC yet (2 turbo snails) but...

55 Gallon RR - My First REEF Build

White bugs are appearing now in the tank. I am not sure what they are but I did see some pods online that seemed to match. Have a look at the video and see for yourself. Please let me know if these are good or not. - Thanks! Happy Reefkeeping. youtu.be/fzNZH0Ksdrk

55 Gallon RR - My First REEF Build

Good news (I think) the water tests are showing a spike in the nitrate at 2PPM so I suspect the system cycle is maturing. For some reason I did not see any ammonia spike but it may have occurred between testing. The rock is showing increased coralline and hair algae growth even while keeping...

Collecting from local waters a bad idea?

Hello, If you are located near a body of saltwater you may be tempted to collect some things for use in your home reef aquarium. Collecting ornamental fish and live corals could have a negative impact on the environment and the future of the hobby and should be avoided. There may be some...

55 Gallon RR - My First REEF Build

I have some good news regarding the tank noise. Adding airline tubing to the vent hole on the top of the Durso standpipe has reduced the gurgling sound. The bubbles in the sump are much smaller and much quieter. The sound of the overflow is still a bit noisy but running water is not so bad. I...

55 Gallon RR - My First REEF Build

This would not be my first choice. I would consider a lower wattage return pump if I decide to reduce the flow. This is a reasonable suggestion however.

Thanks I try some adjustments with the airline tubing from the top. So far my wife has not complained about the sound but if I can improve it she just might notice. The six-line wrasse was my first choice as a reef safe peaceful fish. Individuals can become aggressive but I have heard mostly...

55 Gallon RR - My First REEF Build

Hello, the cycling is going well at this point but I ran into a problem with the DIY sump. I have 1 ¼ inch overflow that is gurgling like crazy. I reduced it down to a half inch outlet with hose connections and it resulted in a slight reduction in noise. I have a standard Durso overflow with...

    Thrive water computer

Some stores do FREE water tests. PETCO had a policy that you must provide a water sample with your dead fish and receipt to get a new fish. This was a way to sell more stuff to correct any issues found. I wonder if you can get FREE test with your PALS card.

    The Hummers Have Returned

Yes the migration is in full swing. We had one last week but the recent rain has slowed his visits. It is fun to follow their arrival online using the map linked here: www.learner.org/jnorth/maps/humm_ruby_spring2014.html

55 Gallon RR - My First REEF Build

Very cool! I work in that area so it would NOT be hard to swing by. It would be great to make a visit when I have a stable system. I would like to start with beginner corals if that is something you have. Thanks!
