    refugium or protein skimmer

I know decisions have been made but I'm going to say this anyway :P If you can find an used aquaclear 500 powerfilter you can turn that into a refugium cheap. I also prefer a fuge to skimmer on most sumpless nano tanks do to the water level changing more rapidly than on a larger tank.

Also look into premium aquatics for bulbs too. A fiji purple bulb would add some pop to your corals.

I saw a special on Discovery channel the other day about the crown of thorns. The more removed from the ocean right now the better.

opinions on section size of refugium

I agree with rfbf. imo plan on a slightly larger footprint for your skimmer for play. Also more you HOB skimmer down to hang out on the first section. It moves it out of your display and gives you a stable water level to work with.

Yes, but 24" T5s would work better imo due to the heat the MH will generate.

Importance of membrane quality in RO/DI systems

They are all basically the same unit, just with the different upgrades Hawkeye pointed out. I prefer a lower gpd membrane because I don't have a high water demand. DI bypass and fast flush work together to clean the membrane of deposits without wasting DI resin. RO only valve - cooking water...

Importance of membrane quality in RO/DI systems

this typhoon 3 The goodies that come with this one make it worth the extra cost over the 5 stage w/float valve imo. I might be biased though since this is the model I own. ;D

    Calcium, Alkalinity,Magnesium additives

How new is the tank? pH will fluctuate for a few months while it is maturing. At what time are you testing you're pH? What is your Alk, Ca, Mg at? Waterchange schedule? Have anything go MIA recently? What size powerfilter? Chances are that it is creating enough agitation on it's own. Have you...

    Pumps generate heat ?

I use those numbers as a starting point for dialing in my temperature, but I use my thermometer to determine what my tank's temp is. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever gone back to look at what my heaters have ever been set to.

    Pumps generate heat ?

It doesn't necessarily need replacing if it can be turned down some more.

    Refugiums

Something else you can try, though degree of difficultly may be higher, is to move the light so that it shines through the side of the fuge instead of from over the top.

    Refugiums

Well in that case... the latest research is that a 6 on, 6 off cycle is supposed to maximize macroalgae's nutrient uptake.

    Refugiums

Opposite of the main display's lighting is optimal for limiting how much pH levels drop overnight. I've seen people paint the fuge sides that face the display.
