    DIY refugium.......

That should work. Something else you could try is to run a drain line into the fuge and the fuge's drain into the fuge.

    When will it end

Solar panels do have some nice tax breaks, but that upfront cost is a killer. I've seen a handful of tanks that use sunlight as it's main source of light with an inexpensive pc lighting for nighttime viewing.

    Pruning Chaeto

Yup scissors work great. Some shake the cheeto that they are removing over thier tanks to drop some of the pods into the display. As for how much. Depends really on how often you want to prune really. I'd look into what steve said too. Most of the time folks are looking for cheeto (Like me if I...

    Restarting... 18g

Yeah, I think I'm going to lower it tomorrow and maybe move stuff around in general in there. As for the feather dusters though. The last two pictures from my first post are from when I had the tank set-up in Utah. I miss that set-up. :'( I didn't realize until you said something that the...

    Restarting... 18g

Well, it's been a couple months so... I've removed my hob filter and the aquaclear powerheads and replaced them with 2 koralia nanos. New inhabitants include a pair of young clams, a frogspawn coral, and a threefer in leathers for the price of one. Thanks hidden reef! Since changing to the...

What tank has a nice footprint?

If you were to go that route I would consider swapping the fuge and return locations. If not don't forget to plumb some of the return line back into the fuge.

What tank has a nice footprint?

Are those Koralias are the ones designed for use with wavemakers? They have two types one runs on 12V DC for wavemaking the other is ac for continuous use. Make sure you buy the right one.

I've heard that they are more reliable than sqwds are. Lemma ask some friends on a different board about them...

    closed loop-yes or no

I used melev's design and it worked really well. I might tee the outputs of a single sqwd over having multiple of them.

    Gravel/sand bed cleaners

For the sand bed I would say no. A good clean-up crew combined with a mature/maturing tank should take care of it. Possibly stirring occasionally as Jonathan mentioned. For the crushed coral though I'd consider getting the vac because that substrate has been known to trap matter and turn into...

Good HQI manufactuers for 12-14K color temp.

Phoenix makes what is regarded to be one of the best 14K 150W bulbs out there. Kicks but in the par department too. I'm currently running one now and am happy with it. I have some pics in my nano thread of the tank. (hopeful update coming Tuesday) The Hamilton 14k should be right up your alley...
