    Hair algae outbreak.

Thanks Jim. It is red sea but I don't want any problems for the return so I'm leaving everything unused. Hopefully I'll swap it at lunch today and be able to test tonight

    Dave’s 90g learning-curve glass room experiment

Well, in an effort to continue battling HA I dusted off the 2 lil fishies Rx - and now I'm running bio pellets AND GFO. Hopefully that helps. Not sure how much the little urchin I got will do. It looks like its pretty stressed and has dropped some spikes. Some of what I've read says once that...

    Hair algae outbreak.

Well after last night it'd almost be worth getting shafted but $30 for 3 snails seems harsh. And the nitrate test I got had leaked and has to go back so not a redletter trip to the reef

    Hair algae outbreak.

Well last night (or rather EARLY this morning) I cleaned the skimmer in and out and gave it a nice vinegar bath. I also cleaned up that section of the sump. Today I'll dust off the phosban150 that's been stored since the bio pellets went online. I also added a common urchin and some more turbos...

    Dave’s 90g learning-curve glass room experiment

The skimmer gets cleaned every 4-5 weeks. maybe it's been a few more since I've been taking my water changes out of the display instead of the sump (trying to siphon algae) and in the past I cleaned it when I would do my changes and emepty out the skimmer section - ususally it was about the...

    Dave’s 90g learning-curve glass room experiment

I haven't noticed a difference Jim. Actually I'm frustrated with the lack of production from my skimmer. I'm wondering if too many nutrients are passing through and contributing to my hair algae outbreak b/c for the life of me I can't figure out a cause.

Ok, enough about that – on to some new stuff. I picked up a plate coral when I got 2 Bangaii cardinals (both were lost in QT :( ) But the plate’s doing well. I always found these to be pretty cool. Day time shots (just the skeleton) And at night with the tenticles out and the flesh...

    Dave’s 90g learning-curve glass room experiment

I’ve also added some stuff to the tank. In the process of added a few pieces given to me from a buddy’s tank I rearranged a bit and while my hands were in the tank my rather RUDE GSMC nipped my arm. No pain but it sure as hell startled me and the jerk of my hand caused a nice rockslide...

    Dave’s 90g learning-curve glass room experiment

An update was long overdue. Guessing I’ll need to split this up a bit so this may be multiple posts. Work’s been busy and well, probably too busy for me to get through this now but hey, adversity builds character and if I didn’t have to try and sneak this in, I wouldn’t appreciate it...

    Hair algae outbreak.

Normal schedule is 15g (10-15%) every other week. I'm ramping that up now for at least the next few weeks to go every week. I have the red sea for reef (Mg,Ca, Alk) and I like them but nothing is quite like a digital reading from a Hanna checker. Anyway I like them and I'd try red sea over...

    Hair algae outbreak.

Thanks – yeah, I’ve read fair amount about carbon dosing in general (most on or linked from RC) – my method’s not too scientific. I’m at about 1/2 or less than needed for my volume and I was doing it mostly to help with high pH from kalk. I bought a chweap bottle of vodka (not dosing the good...

    Hair algae outbreak.

Just regular old hydrogen peroxide? And I'd it's 1ml to 10g how did you end up at 8ml peroxide vs 30 ml vinegar? I dose about 10 ml vinegar and have for about 4 months to offset high pH from the Kalk. I wonder if I should amp that up or start just trying peroxide to see if that helps... I...

    Hair algae outbreak.

Well, the dreaded hair algae has popped up. Fought I'd see if anyone has suggestions to offer. I amped up PWCs (making a new batch of SW now) and dropped feelings to every other day. As for the particulars. I tested today: Phosphate 0.01 (Hanna meter) Alk 7.17 dkh Mg 1400 Ca 400 pH 8.3 sg 1.026...

    QT failure

My guess is wild caught. The tank bred tend to be a lot more expensive. The guy gets mostly coral and has a few fish brought in as well. Guessing he had them about a week or two. Plus a week for me plus some time with the supplier so they made it about a month at least. Not too much flow in the...

    QT failure

I picked up 2 Banggii Cardinals from a reffer (not LFS) but he's a dealer more or less (orders livestock and re-sells). I used my smaller 10g QT setup as they were small and don't move much. Same setup I've used for every fish in my system just about (well I've varied the tank size) did regular...

    Camden Aquarium Kid's Zone

worth checking out but it's not "open" for another week or 2 - if you're there volunteering you may be given access but we were told it isn't "open" yet well, if anything's missing in the basement, make sure you look up there first :nevreness:

    Camden Aquarium Kid's Zone

Took the kids for a preview event given for members last night. They rehabbed the 3rd floor and opened it for kids. A lot of neat stuff (some of it noisy) for kids - interactive and such. They also had some tanks viable at a lower lever - easier for little kids to see in. And the best part...

    Gold stripe maroon clown

Guessing they'll be upset -if I can find a home for her. Anyway I'll tell them that she needed to go to a bigger tank and as a bonus I'll move the perc up from the sump and maybe the perc will get a "life partner"
