How does a Calicum Reactor Work?

A calcium reactor is used to maintain calcium levels through the dissolution of Calcified media within the chamber. This is done by reducing the pH of the water to around 7.4-7.6 via CO2 injection. However, you can't majorly "bump" up the Calcium output of the reactor without increasing CO2...

November Monthly Meeting; Sunday the 23rd Whiting, NJ

ANDY! (and anyone attending) Wanna make some Pillars? *wink* *wink* I have about a pint and a half (or two maybe) of thorite left we can use to attach formed rocks for your tank! We'll just need some plastic coat hangers, Zippie ties, a Cordless drill and various drill bits- Let me know...

    help new reef tank

aquamen13- where's the tank pic?!?! I mean aquamen72 (typo, lol) Tom, I take pics on manual mode, 125 shutter, lowest f possible, I try not to zoom with the lens, it makes the fstop higher, thus making the pic darker.

    help new reef tank

lol, you actually took my advice. See? We be helpful here. Your tank is cycling, and it's normal. After the 7th or 8th week or so, you can start testing for nitrates, and maybe even do a 5 to 10% water change, and all that brown stuff will subside. Any one have any more advice?

    Flatworm Exit

I've used it before (twice) and its safe. As with most "reef safe" medications, have a lot of carbon ready, follow the directions to the tee, and make sure you have a good amount of already made (and parameter corrected) fresh salt water

    VODKA dosing regimen- notes.

Thanks Wendy and Erna! I love the new lights too. As a matter of fact, I am HIGHLY contemplating at not even hooking up the T5's at this point. I am slowly getting acclimated to the intensity of the lights, albeit dim for me. It's a little blue for my taste, of course this is coming from someone...

    Ca reactor not keeping up

I have the same reactor, and found that my corals weren't growing as fast as before when I was adding numerous buffering additives. I had 6500K's so I know the PAR was there. I resumed the Kalkwasser drip, and not much happened. AND and then I slowly started adding Driveway salt (MgCl2) and...

what does carbonate hardness and phosphate mean?

Carbonate hardness can be raised using Baking Soda. Calcium boosters usually only increase Calcium content in the tank, and not specifically hardness.

Adding a copperband w/ current fishload

This is the same reason why I got my copperband. They are a hit or miss fish though, you have to get one that is eating frozen or prepared food in the LFS. I had an initial infestation of some small featherdusters, hydroids and two to three aptaisias. The fish took care of that, but am now...

    Interceptor treatment .... again.

As long as you kept your PO4 media running during the treatment, you should be able to keep it online, even after treatment. I'm hoping you kept the skimmer running as well (while shutting off the air vent) and other circulatory devices that could possibly hold water...

    Interceptor treatment .... again.

Its been my experience that SPS's and most corals do not like this at all. Interceptor, Iodine, Flatworm exit, or TMPCC (Tropic Marin Pro Coral Cure) is all I've used.
