I don't know how deep, or what kind of substrate you intend to use, but the "live" type is typically 32% more expensive than the dry. Using F&S pricing, with CaribSea Special Grade as an example: 20lbs.* of live is $24.95 per bag($1.25 lb.), 40lbs of the dry is $34.99 per bag($.85 lb.).

I bought a half gallon of BRS bio-pellets when I started a couple years ago, and have no complaints. My research at the time recommended that they be made of Polyhydroxyalkanoates or PHA. All other brands I was considering, weren't revealing what their pellets were made of, which made me a...
"Whatever supplement you choose, I'd suggest targeting the natural seawater concentration: 1285 ppm. For practical purposes, 1250-1350 ppm is fine. I would not suggest raising magnesium by more than 100 ppm per day. If you need to raise it by several hundred ppm, splitting the addition over...
If your Mg was 1240, and you increased it by 100 ppm to 1340, you're good to go. The uptake of Mg is really small, so I don't think you'll see any significant reduction while you're away. I'd probably just leave the tank, until you return. What about your Ca? Do you have a solution/supplement to...
I started out with 1/3 of the recommended amount for my system, added another 1/3 in three weeks and the balance in another 3weeks. I did remove my GFO, but kept my GAC on line. Keep the flow so the pellets are just fluidized, so you may want to bump the flow a little each time you add pellets...
I would get your levels where you want them first, then test and record your readings each day to determine your load. Once you know how much your system uses, then determine how much you need to add each day, and divide it up by the number of times you want to dose.
Currently, I mix the kalk one day in a 2 gal. container(2 tsp.gal.), and pour the settled limewater into my ATO container(leaving the residue in the mixing container), the next day. It's important to have lids on both containers. In the past I used a 1 gal. jug, with a hole in the cap, and used...
