No, gfo will only remove phosphates not nitrates. Diatoms mainly feed off of silicates which is pretty much always present in your tank. It's one of the major elements in saltwater. They can also feed on nitrates. So by bringing your nitrates down you will limit excess food for the diatoms...
Amphidium, a type of Dino, only grows on the sand bed so would definitely check under the scope. If it is Diatoms they will eventually go away once the silicate is exhausted in the tank.
This is from Randy Holmes Farley on Phosguard.
Aluminum oxide is the primary ingredient in several commercial phosphate binders, such as Seachem's PhosGuard™. These materials are always white solids, although not all white phosphate binders are aluminum oxide. Phosphate binds strongly to...

Check out ICP testing. The marine blocks and postcard do leach small amounts of aluminum. Tends to make some.softies act a bit funny. Would take all of them out of the display.
Tanks mature with biodiversity. Vibrant probably destroys or upsets it. I would look at products like BioDigest or even better, add real live rock from one of the Gulf Companies. You can also get some sump sludge from a fellow reefer.
Flucanazole can really rock SPS corals so be careful if you down that route. Vibrant was okay but always left me dealing with a cyano bloom during use. If you can expose the rock a couple of drops will peroxide will kill it.
So the assessor egg ball was gone last night. The male assessor is still hiding out in the cave though so maybe he moved them out of sight. Was hoping the clown eggs were going to hatch last night. That was a no go. Hopefully tonight is the night.
