I've read this on many accounts and have seen first hand how the white eggcrate seems to attract more algae then black. As Kyle maybe it's just a coincidence. That said I'v had white eggcrate in my tank that is covered with corriline. Before that though it had a significant amount of hair algae...

This is what I was going to suggest as well if you are starting with all dead. I set my rockscape, added sand since I used dry, the just filled with rodi. When it was I turned on the main pump and added salt a little at a time to the sump till it was where I wanted.
