Moving it around may stress it more, so if it still feels firm to the touch it is likely shedding. Good (not crazy) flow will help this process along. Could take a day or three, but it should be back in no time. Grows and sheds like a snake.

I think it would be better on rubble than the sand itself, but I personally haven't tried it.

In general I would be inclined to put the mushrooms and ricordia down low towards the bottom. They don't have a great light requirement and will wander up or down depending on space available.
