    and an f.y.i... in my tank, approx 150lbs rock = approx 30 gallons of displacement, so my 75 gallon tank has only 45ish gallons of water.

    while 71 is low, not sure that it is critical.... i know a drop in water temp can encourage ick, not sure if 71 is low enough to make you worry bout that though

    the "brown algea" is diatoms, and are from the silica in the play sand... so your assumptions are correct

    Teflon Tape

    be carefull which pipe dope you use, some are for gas and not ok for potable water.... make sure the can says it is ok for water, cause if it is ok for us, then it should be ok for our fish.. but extra tefflon tape should do the trick as mike said
