one thing i plan on doing with my stand when i build it would be a door on the side.... i think it would come in very handy as far as sliding the sump in and out....
actually i wouldn't use "fresh" used live sand, now it's been sitting in not too much water for 3 weeks stagnateing.... kinda scary., at this point you could dry it and it will be just sand and possible use it. but this is the foundation of your ecosystem you're building.... don't skimp...

if you can level it, why not level it.... i agree with the others.... the nailer strip for the carpet is against the wall and no wider than 1 1/4" so i'm sure that's not a factor, the tank is most likely farther from the wall than that.... as far as the shimming, if your dad is as handy as he...

i have a beautiful potters, that has never touched a coral.... aquatic obsessions always seems to have a couple on hand.... mine is sometimes a little rough on the ebli angel, but they seem to have an arrangement...
can your family members not all stand in the same place in the house for fear of falling through the floor? floor loads in any house standing can support a 55g tank. if that tank wouuld "fall through your floor" then your family has bigger problems than determining what size tank to get....
if your having some type of venting draining problems you really should figure out what happened and correct it.... you never know if it will happen again when your not there to catch it, or what the ramifications will be.... jmo
i've had one of those for bout 3 months growing well, i feed him the tiny particles in the dish after the rods food thaws with a turkey baster. mine seems quite happy thus far
