right but if you get get a clogged pipe, will the emergency pipe support the entire flow without a syphon? I think that is the question.

Man you sure always have a variety, I’d love to see the grow out systems you have, must be a huge set up.

I think that’s too small. What if you lose your syphon? You should size it to gravity fed for emergencies, because emergency. And the backup should be the same size.

I'm running a 1.5 syphon. To get a syphon, my gate valve is like 3/4 closed lol... But, that's good. I say that your drains all need to be able to handle more then the flow of your system running without a syphon.

If you have the space, I agree with everyone here that you should go with the external one. The only thing better would be having a scupper box built for the tank. It's just a bunch of holes drilled, with a grate in front that flows into the external box. Same as the 3rd party ones pictured...

You should do the test before drilling regardless. I was at a LFS recently and was going to pick up a Marineland cube. I asked about being tempered, and they wouldn't answer. They recommended buying a reef ready one (I want it done my way so I didn't). They had a few customers whos tanks...
