Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
Everyone has snails, or do they? I ran out of choices to include. Take the time to look up some of these you don't have. My Stomatella came as hitch hikers. This one below fluoresces at night with UV light.
ACC has them occasionally. I got the Orange one from them. I got the blue one from Anthony (The Raffle King or something similar. If you stay in the hobby, things keep on showing up that you would never expect. Lastly, I thought some starfish ate sponges, which is part of the reason you didn't...
What wrasses do you keep. Feel free to post a picture of yours so people can learn about wrasses. Look up the wrasses mentioned to find out more.
Here is my Yellow Wrasse. He hides when I near the tank.
Most grow naturally as seeded from frags. The one I got on a frag I left on the frag and it grew and connected to the rocks around. Another I placed in a crevasse on my rocks. Although most prefer decent water flow.
If you expose many sponges to air, it will kill them or make them die back. But often, if there is a little left and conditions are good, it will come back. When salt water tanks were, and perhaps still are, started with rocks from the ocean, sponges and algae would be part of the hitchhikers...
Here is one that may be encrusting. I also have lots of small white sponges and a few jelly bean sized black sponges that I don't know what they are. I remember seeing some at Feng's Reef that had very long tubes and suspect the yellow on the anchor was an encrusting sponge.
Welcome to the club. I also started my tank after I retired. It is a good amount of work, but interesting enough to want to do it. For those of us that don't know what JSAS, NJAS, BCAS and NJAGC mean, maybe you could explain a little more. Half of the Avatars are not reef related, but identify...
Some people (Europe) won't start a reef tank until sponges are growing. Some like encrusting sponges are pests. Others add color or unique interest to your tank. I recommend you use this poll as an opportunity to learn a little about the mushrooms in the poll.
Here is one sponge photobombing...
What types of Anemones do you have, or have had. Post a picture of you favorite one. I think this tang wanted to know if it was a friend or "an Enemy".
What is nice about the poll of the day or even week is that it gives you another reason to come to the web site. I do imagine it is a lot of work. Things that might help it would be to increase the number of posts on the home page so it is not out of sight so quick when a few people post...
No,
I use one of the small bedrooms as an office. I have my tank where a desk would normally go, in a cubby hole. I also have a table I built and a few bookshelves and store a large chair in the room. Only one person can see the tank at a time from that chair (plus a grandchild), and you can...
