Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
I am not sure if I understood you correctly, but if you are asking if there is a way to feed the sump without drilling the tank, then yes, there are HOB overflow boxes you can buy:

or make :
It is questionable how...
Sump has alltogether quite different function from canister filter. Sump basically serves the following purpose:
1) Increases the total water volume which has plenty of benefits.
2) Provides the buffer zone when adding any additives. It allows the added chemicals to dilute to harmless levels...
I would stay away from halimedia or similar calcareous algae if I would to keep stoney corals since it competes with them for Ca. Also, I wouldn't consider it as efficient nutrient exporter for harvesting on the same scale as chaeto or caulerpa.
:) I ment: take the water out of the system through plastic pipe and then chill the pipe. Not efficient at all, but you do not worry about the rust or the growth inside the pipe.
I wouldn't trust aluminum in the tanks. I know that it will easily corrode and erode in several ways but I simply...
That is the point I am making it won't grow much faster even if you implemen't longer light intervals or nutrient richer environment. When compared with lets say grape caulerpa. If the growth potential of individual cells of caulerpa increases by 100% you might acheve even 100% voluminous growth...
You have to think about the nitrogen cycle as live and dynamic process where each stage of the process will constantly contract or expand based on the supply of nutrients and demand (number of bacterias).
So, assuming that your 29 gal was properly cycled and balanced, and that the conditions of...
Interesting articles. Never crossed my mind that ozon generators can potentially add nitrates to the water. Just shows you the complexity of things we do. :)
Wherever on the web or in these forums we talk about chaeto macro algae, everybody agrees that it grows slow. Recently, out of curiosity and nothing better to do, I trie to unvind and pull one strand of chaeto from the clump that sits in my fuge. To my amasement, the strand was more then 10'...
DON'T do that !!! By clumping it, the strands in the interior will no longer have enough light, or proper gas and nutrient exchange. Without light, photosynthetic plants revert to consuming the oxygene and nutrients inside them until they die off, in which case they are actively contributing to...
Split it and add it in smaller doses if possible. Are you dosing it manually? If you dose more then 50ml, dilute it with, lets say, 200-300ml of fresh water (from top off) and let it drip for some time (just like Kalk).
The cheapest automation would be 2 aqualifter pumps (12$ each) and digital...
Strictly speaking it wouldn't be a wise idea because of both oxidation and galvanic corrosion of any metal. Here is an intersting article about rusting of metals on boats which at first glance might not be a problem for us until you realize that those floating ions will float in your tank...
Raise Alk (6 is on the low side) and if you have fuge alternate the light cycle with the main tank, and if you have a Ca reactor, suspend its work during night.
Last week I had also very huge pH shifts (7.6-8.15) and I have found that my Alk dropped to 5 because of my Alk line for automatic...
Since I hate the look of discs and plugs I would vote for concrete ones since it is easier to crush them and trim them to resemble natural rocks and fit the rest of my rockwork, without damaging the corals mounted on the. ;D
Day 1, 8:30 PM
Noticed small gray patch (1/8x1/4") on the right side of my Hippo Tang, close to the tail. It is hiding in tight rock crevices, and zooming through small openings in rocks and corals, so it could be just a scratch from a rock, but since these Tangs are very prone to ich, I should...
Why would you feel guilty? Moon lights are just a fad and certainly do not mimic the real Moon, not to mention that many fish that do utilize Moon cycles (clowns for example) are probably tank raised and have no clue what Moon is.
