    Running your skimmer intermittently

IMO nitrate levels indicate how much material is coming in on the front end, which is what you want to control. So if you skim continuously and Nitrates are 5, then the system is in a good place. If Nitrates head down to zero, the tank is getting too clean and skimming should be pulled back...

    Help with Stocking

There is no inch per fish rule. Rather, and IMO, there are a few intelligent ways to approach the question, and they don't require guessing in advance on outcomes. The best thing to do is prioritize what you want and add one or two at a time, while checking levels as you go to see if...

    Help with Stocking

Can't really comment on whether that plan is do-able in terms of the amount of livestock you are planning. It depends on details about the system, like if there's a sump, fuges or other other holding tanks plumbed in, total water volume/capacity, what the turnover is out and back into the DT...

Some Corals are dying off. Others are growing.

I've been using Seachem carbon for a long time without any problems. But I didn't switch to it, we've always used it on this system. I've heard anecdotes of bad reactions the days after changing to a new carbon. The speculation is that it changes the water so quickly that the corals react...

Some Corals are dying off. Others are growing.

You should confirm those results. It's very possible to have zero phosphates in a system. Phosphates that are too low will result in coral tissue die off - http://www.wetwebmedia.com/ca/volume_5/volume_5_3/phosphates.htm. That's why they sell phosphate media that won't let levels get below...

Of course it's water or light, so you'll need to post specifics about both of those.

    Dosing

I use Seachem's 2 part which is called Reef Builder (Alk) and Reef Advantage Calcium, and they say on the label how to use it for dosing relative to your test results. They're dosed twice per week as needed. We also use their Mg additive, but that's rarely needed cause the new salt mix we use...

From my experience, when you drop the phosphates in the water that low it takes the water-bound phosphates and the rock/sand bound phosphates out of equilibrium. The phosphates in the sand are likely greater than 0, so to reach equilibrium the sand phosphates are being released into the water...

    Lets talk rock and aquascaping

You can do it either/any of the ways, there is no wrong answer - just different schools of thought. I would never use dead rock - one of our goals is to import new life to my system with adding live sand and rock, and usually pick it up from tank breakdowns on Craigslist. Yet, I know other...
