8 pounds in the display right? (implication is that all the LR is in the sump - like crazy4acros' tank). Or he had a deep sand bed (remote and in display) - otherwise I don't see how you maintain a 55 with a bunch of fish without some way to provide a medium for the bacteria to survive.
I brought my injured morning dove here:

It's in Millington which I guess is a hike for you. They take all birds - not just raptors.
But the website has good info regardless.
i love this tank - and was really impressed with the acryllic rods used to put the rockwork together. I wish I had his time/energy (sand, then barebottom, then back to sand) and money (losing a black tang...ouch) to do this.
i have this also...I don't like puncturing pipes so I didn't use the brass saddle valve - I went with the Y hose adaptor for an extra $9. Overall i like the unit a lot -it's bigger than I expected though.
DC is owned and funded by taxpayers via the smithsonian.
The bronx zoo is funded by WCS - which is funded via members/corporations.
Also - small tip -the bronx zoo is free on wednesdays. You have to pay for parking and some exhibits inside (butterfly, asia-tram, children's zoo, congo etc.)...
I've always enjoyed the zoo. Especially on weekdays. ;D
Besides the employees - we were the third car in line at one of the southern gate entrances...once we got in we went straight to the congo...no one was there except us. We love that place. We've been members now for 5 years.

"one site had experienced a population explosion of sea urchins—pests that feeds on corals."
I recall this happened on the pacific coast kelp forest...and divers were hired to hammer/kill the urchins.
Of course that was all before we learned about sushi and sea urchin roe. :P
How'd you like...
i'd be shocked if a 1 inch mantis killed a flame angel...unless by sheer luck he somehow got the fish stuck in it's burrow and repeatedly slammed him.
I've previously gotten my mantis shrimp out by taking the rock out, (with bucket underneath) and dosing RO water right into the hole the guy is...
physically, all crabs - hermits, emeralds, etc. have jaws that are designed to smash and grind. So physically speaking, they are perfectly capable of eating bristle worms.
I'm not so sure about copepods - since they are tiny little guys. Lack of copepods is more likely due to a small refugium...
yeap. Unless you are able to find a dealer who will warranty a refurb'd one...other than that it's buyer beware as usual. But that applies to anything - like a vortech, tunze pump, etc.
depends on what kind of corals....but lighting is a must unless you plan on going solar. You could have a bubbleking skimmer and that won't do you any good if you just have NO lights. Look into lights such as VHO, PC, MH, T5 or a combo thereof. Again depends on what type of corals.
I think the...
I've seen the screws on my old danner mag-drive rust in the tank. I'd like to think that a little rust isn't going to be too bad - but with anything - moderation is key - and in a closed system - moderation is difficult to attain. It's usually too much or too little.
