I've had my 30g rimless frag tank for 5 yrs. No issues with it at all. I agree the bulkheads and plumbing are not worth keeping so figure that in if you go reef ready.

What size tank are you looking for?

I would check trooaquarium they usually have good prices on tanks. Also if you can wait ask your lfs and some others when marine land is doing their next "blowout" sale. Tanks are usually discounted significantly for this sale. Some stores pass the savings along and others don't so ask a few.

I think I would go with the 120 if I had the choice. The 4x2 footprint is very nice.
