I have only 4 hermits in my 200 that I reluctantly put in there after my tank move and I find them munching on snails all the time. They were little guys, guess I shouldn't have put them in, Now I need more snails.
Is this toadstool new to the tank? I introduced one into my father;s tank and it took 3 weeks to open at all.
Mine closes up every once in a while for about an hour or two, just whenever it feels like it.

Sunny take a look on top of the gfo canister and make sure the top above the elbow says in...Maybe it was accidentally assembled wrong and the flow is going in the opposite direction.
That's odd? I get tumbling with 2 units together and still have to throttle back.
Couple of checks that I can think of right now.
Do you have the pump attached to the left(IN) side of the unit? Is the ball valve on that side?
Did you pack the gfo? Not supposed to.
Is the maxijet clogged or...

I would say if you are worried about the rusty nail, change the water. Probably not a problem at all, but now is the time and you have nothing to lose by being safe.
