    New fish

??? How can a starfish be reefsafe and then eat a fish? Frankly before adding any further fish you should definitely identify what kind of "starfish" you have. It would stink if you have the dreaded fish-eating Ophiarachna incrassata brittle star.

    My 24g Nano Cube

joe - if it's on the substrate you probably have a Tridacna squamosa or derasa . But maybe you got a maxima. Anyways a squamosa or derasa may grow too big for your tank...just keep that in mind. Good luck!

    algae problem

is it possible while you were on vaca she feed the tank too much? I've had more than one sitter do that... ::) In essence while you were gone there'd be a spike in nutrients giving fuel to the algae. Now that you are back though everything may be held in check. Losing six-line in that size tank...

    Fish Reconmendations

how about some kind of goby or blenny - you don't appear to have any fish that inhabit that "zone" in your tank.

    algae problem

As with all algae issues - it would be helpful to state the size of the tank, water parameters and livestock if any. You have two choices in my opinion. Treat the symptom or identify the root cause and act accordingly. Treating the symptoms means possibly increasing the clean up crew and doing...

What's your favorite LFS and why?

In this order: I like AqOB. I like OC II. My family loves AqOb (odin will give my 2 yr old a face wash. :o) ). But AO doesn't carry non-fish pet items - so I go to OC II. I like RedSand but I haven't been there enough to make it a "favorite".

    live rock

depends on what is on the LR. Certain corals and sponges simply can NEVER be exposed to air. So if you have those hitched on your LR - they will not be able to eject the air molecules from their tissue and will slowly decay. It's rather gross if anyone has ever gotten Florida LR shipped in water...

    submersible pump(s) Opinions please!

that pic looks like an aga 90 - hence the one overflow. If you design this for your 120, the 120 will have dual overflows. Just keep that in mind as well...(unless you go with a non-aga tank).

    The economy

definitely not alone. I get to enjoy the next two decades also planning and trying to save for college for two and if I am really "lucky"...marriage for my 2 girls... (runs off to weep). :)

    DIY refugium.......

you're spending a lot of money on a 180 - but this design you have is complicated and in my opinion risking a flood. It looks like you have two return pumps attached to one line going up? Am I reading that right?

Thinking about starting an Anemone only tank ...

the orange tube-like coral - that looks like "sun coral" (common name) aka Tubastraea sp.. Google it and see if it is. If you do have it, it considered an azooxanthellae coral - that is, something that does not have zooxanthellae in its body. Without zoo, the coral has absolutely zero need for...

    Reef Safe List?

You can infer if a fish isn't on this list - it's "ok": Bad Fish List ...ideally you pick up a book on fish to be sure. Minimum size is all relative. A baby hippo tang could be kept in a 29 gallon or aquapod initially. A full grown Hippo would probably prefer a 215 and up. Somewhere economics...

What tank has a nice footprint?

I'd sell it. I know when I started the hobby - a 55 set up was what I wanted to do. I'm sure there are others like me... Full disclosure: I'm actually looking for a 55 - but I'm going to use it for my turtle...lol.

    Field Mice

"light bulb" / eureka thought of the day This relates to my story on field mice in the backyard of course... Early on in grass mowing season I noticed that right by the gas tank there was some dry leaves/grass. I just scooped it out and then did mowed. A week or two later when I wheeled out...

    The economy

the uncertainty in the economy definitely makes me pause. The US dollar stinks so buying any non-US made equipment is going to cost more (and that includes US manufacturers that "make" things abroad) - not to mention the killer cost of shipping thanks to the Oil prices. The only thing my family...

    When will it end

NJ lost most if not all the solar panel rebates. That stated - I saw this and read about how one reefer was designing his house so that the solar tube was over the reef tank. Obviously it's a lot of money upfront again - but the only supplementation would be for actinics. Solatubes

    New Tunze Pumps Anyone pre-ordering?

The new streams do look nice - what with the smaller "footprint" - plus the fact that the will come with a magnet is a definite plus. Maybe if I didn't just drop 5 large on stupid carpenter ants - I'd consider it. ::)
