Chris, if you are desperate... you can strip the wiring and attach the controller wires to a 9v battery. That should run them at about 90% power.

I've experienced the "brown residue" with several different salts. Not sure if it's normal, but it is common. I kept changing to avoid it also and I've settled on Aqua Vitro Salinity. Not only does it not leave any residue, but I'm very happy with the parameters and consistency with each batch...

Yea, they look like chitons to me too. I've had some small ones that I first thought were just some sort of snail, but they grew larger after time. They are pretty good algae grazers.
