    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Jim, what Ranco did you get. The probes i've seen are a short little metal rod on the end of a wire....that go right into water???

    ATLL'S 65 Gallon Reef

Instead of acrylic rod, just go to your local dollar store and buy a bunch of plastic clothes hangers. Cut these to whatever length you need.

    Holiday Party!

Very nicely and concisely put George. And Anthony, I only give 2 cents worth of opinion, and some say it’s not even worth the two cents. So the way I see it, you owe me 8 cents. Again, JMTC.

Non-RR to RR Tank, worth the move or not?

Juan, not sure if you’ve seen it, but here is the “accepted” frame design using dimensional lumber. With a four foot tank, all the boards could be 2x4’s. By building your own, you can now make it any height, width or depth. I would recommend topping it with ¾ plywood and using the same for...

    best Camera $300.00 for pics

Edwin, I’m certainly no expert with today’s technology. But back in the day of film, I was into photography. I still have my Canon FI that a buddy bought out of Vietnam…what a deal. Anyway, I would think that you’d want a camera that had the option of changing lenses….for those macro...

    Holiday Party!

Taz, I respectfully must disagree with you. This was posted for quite some time with minimal interest. I was shocked at the lack of interest in attending. There was plenty of notice and reminders by George to sign up before we were locked into the room for 25. Very few did. We could...

Is Prestone driveway heat still safe?

 Lets just say I have a life-time supply.....I think a 40 pound bag for less than $20. I'd suggest you buy the mg-chloride from BRS.

Is Prestone driveway heat still safe?

If you are talking DIY, you will want to use Mag Flakes (or BRS magnesium chloride) and Epsom salt. Check out THIS link for the recipe, post #17.

Is Prestone driveway heat still safe?

The Kreeper said it....you bring it up to one gallon. I typically add about half the water to the jug, then add the dry mix and then bring it up to one gallon. EDIT TO ADD: Just noted that saltkreeper specifically mentioned baking soda. If you are using baking soda, it’s solubility isn’t...

Is Prestone driveway heat still safe?

I have heard that Pedaldow and Preston are in fact the same. But to clarify your “more concentrated” comment, the aforementioned products are anhydrous….that is, without bound water. The Dow Flakes, which no one can find, are with water attached (hydrous). If you were to follow Randy’s...

Is Prestone driveway heat still safe?

I've been using it since 2008.

    What happened to my Nori!

I went to my local Oriental market today (Route 18 in East Brunswick) to stock up on nori, since I was running low. They had re-done the store over, and everything was moved around. I asked four different employees where I could find nori, seaweed, sushi wrap….and no one spoke English. I...

    BRS Soda Ash

If you mixed two cups of soda ash made up to one gallon with RO/DI water, it is the same as B-Ionic....so no problem mixing them. Just make sure you mix Alk with Alk and Calc with Calc. You'll know right away if you screw up....calcium carbonate will immediately precipitate.

    BRS Soda Ash

Yes....it's slightly exothermic. It won't get so hot it melts the plastic container.

    Lets talk plumbing!

Yep….the math still shows that two 1 inch pipes “fit” into one 1 ½ inch pipe…so you get partial credit for the correct math formula and logic, and a couple points off for having the wrong numbers. All good stuff!

    Lets talk plumbing!

ATL Beat me to it, but his math is a little off...he used D not R. If you throw friction and surface area effects out the window and only look at cross-sectional areas (Pie-R-Squared) So for the 1 inch pipe: 3.14 x (0.5)2 = 0.79 in2 and since you have two 1 inch pipes, 1.6 in2 And for...

    Jimroth's Big Ol' Tank

Jim, you’ll never cease to amaze me. I have the number for a good therapist, when you return from your fantasy. I will have to agree on the performance of a becketted skimmer. The best I’ve had as far as removing gunk from the tank….and I’ve used an MTC, MRC 2 and MRC 3…all with...

"Installing" live sand and kick starting a cycle

Wet live sand is still not a problem…either use a big pipe or large mouth funnel. And most likely you will see a mini cycle. I have always been amused by “live sand’ that has been sitting on the shelf of some LFS for 6 months plus. I can’t see how it could still be “live.” Anyway...
