That footprint is tough for larger fish. If you are having a hard time with the smaller guys the larger guys are not gonna be any easier. You could try a wrasse, maybe a six line but they don't get real large and will pretty much use the entire tank. I would question why you can't keep small...

I did see where someone on RC covered the bottom of the tank with a thin layer of silicon then added some sand. Let the silicone cure then remove the extra sand. It looked good, I imagine epoxy would work just a well or better

What's the eggcrate for? I thought you were going bare bottom. If its for under the rock you could use StarBoard do a search for it you'll find it. You could even use acrylic. Or like everyone else said just buy black eggcrate. I'm sure the shop could get it or if not then fish factory always...
