Folks, if you've recently upgraded or renewed your annual club membership but it's still not active, please reach out to the BOD or a moderator. The PayPal system has a slight bug which it doesn't allow it to activate the account on it's own.
Bryan, the first year of a saltwater tank is like riding a roller coaster. There are ups and downs and even screaming involved. You will go through hair algae, diatoms, pestilence and cyanobacteria......well maybe not the pestilence. It’s just the progression of things and the test of...
I was so intrigued by the video link Mike posted about the $1 DIY skimmer that I soaked the wooden air block in vinegar overnight to give my little skimmer another chance. Today I hooked it up to Maxum air pump that came with the skimmer and was once again disgusted with the lack of any foam...
OK, I’ve found it and here’s what I’ve got…..the tubing is actually 1 inch ID. If it doesn’t reach, for a couple bucks you can get the 1 inch fittings and pipe to get it close enough to hook up the tubing.
I still contend that you have a flow problem. Unfortunately the head loss calculator is not working on RC. A pump putting out ca 2000 gph with maybe 300 – 400 gph lost to the tee-offs, and now six, 90 degree turns in the last 6 – 8 inches…….I’d be willing to bet you have less than 600 gph...
First my rant on UL….it’s meaningless. Actually what it means is that a company PAID UL to have the UL seal of approval. Similar to ADA on dental stuff, etc….it’s a paid seal of approval….meaningless. I reference the Coralife/Zilla power strip that is UL approved. It’s a fire stick...
Again, questions with ignorance…..could this be past damage from the fact that the old MRC ran a MAG 24 that drew (I think) 265 watts through this switch? The new SWC only draws (I think), 27 watts….almost a 10 fold difference. Should I still be concerned?
Dave, I have advanced degrees in ignorance, so I know nothing about electronics. Should I be worried? I will tell you I’ve had this for years, and the last time it switched off the skimmer was when I was running an MRC skimmer. Does it generate heat when it is “running” or only when the...
Hold on Pinky…..oh wait, I forgot, you’re The Brain! (Sorry, when my kids were in their formidable years, I had to endure Pinky and The Brain cartoons…..Something about taking over the world.) Does this mean that everyone is still “in,” or just those who “passed” Round One by...
Float switch to 120 volt outlet
This is the best I could show on the setup I have of the float switch controlling a 110 V outlet. I don’t know electronics, so I’m not sure what the doohickeys are called. I’ll do the best I can.
Here is the outlet and the little “electronic piece” in the...
Hey Mike, thanks for the link. I was liking this DIY, and the price, until it got to his collection container. The only thing I can say is that he lied about the cost being $1. I see I now have to go buy a fifth of Jameson, which at my local watering hole is about $18. I can’t afford...
I know I could search on finding a skimmer for my JBJ 28, but I thought I’d get the latest input from the members. So whose skimmer should I be looking at?
Someone made the one I have…someone who knows electronics….way beyond me. The switch is a regular float switch that is attached to a couple resistors and other thingies that then hooks to a 120 outlet. If you know electronics, you’re more than welcome to take a look at the little board...
I have the d120 fixture that I purchased off of ebay….exact fixture that Reefbreeders sells as their “value” fixture. You can see details HERE, post 24.
I’m very happy with the fixture.
With recent discussions about vermetid snails, I was scratching my head about your post….”poop holders.”
It finally hit me (I think), that you were talking about the skimmate containers I made back in December:
If that’s the case, HERE is the DIY on how to build one. Very happy on...
David, thanks for your input on this. I’ve been reading and I believe you were correct in identifying the large ones that I have as vermetid as well. I also have the smaller ones that are the common ones found in many aquaria….and reproduce easily. The larger ones are not as common and...
