So we were going to break down this tank and sell it (and eventually we probably will) but we got a great deal on some fish so it remains running. For stocking plan we went with 2 helfrichi firefish and a magnificent goby. We got great deals on all three fish, so we were pretty happy. I will put...
We moved a bunch of the rock work around so the tank was rather cloudy on top of the jaw fish redigging his burrow. So to mark the B.C. A.D. split here is our pistol shrimp (he molted in the bucket).
So this post will delineate the B.C. A.D. tank (remember Before Crash After Disaster). It is almost quite depressing when you look above and then look at our new FTS:
This was kind of before and in between the when we added in the remaining coral frags. Just a quick shot of our acro crab...
I have decided to make it easier for everyone I will not just talk about before the crash and after the disaster. For those of you at home that is B.C. and A.D. So all the picks going up tonight are A.D., good I am glad you are on board with this.
Alright we did some research and this crab is a bad crab. It is a swimmer and even though it is small now it can get big and will be a predator. If someone still wants this guy, you can have him but we just wanted to put this warning up. If someone wants him for food, that is fine with us.
We just put in three new sand beds and used Carib Sea Fiji Pink. It is fine so it doesn't trap waste like crushed coral but it is not like the sugar sand that gets all over everything.
+1 on rinsing with saltwater. When we switched tanks for our 20g (the old one was scratched beyond belief) we pulled everything out and put it in another heated tank. We then rinsed the sand with saltwater which will keep it alive but wash out the nasty stuff. I have never dealt with a DSB, but...
No idea on the ID yet, will get a picture up tonight. We found him in the 12g last night and since we are not big crab people we figured we would put him up for free because the alternative the crab might not like.
As far as salt goes here is my opinion. Even if you do a one gallon water change a week, that would be roughly 200 weeks until you kill your salt (if you buy a 200g bucket). Since the expense is going to be low I would go with the higher end salt. I use Trop Marin, and I know some people have...
You need to add instant start or a piece of raw shrimp to really kick in your cycle. LR and LS will start a cycle but a very small one. You will think you have completed your cycle but when you add fish and start feeding them you will get another ammonia spike.
Fred, I was going through your thread with my wife and she pointed out you still might even need to add something to be certain your tank has cycled fully. Adding LR and LS to a tank alone will cycle it, but with such a small tank, adding a fish (without a stronger biological cycle, like a piece...
Fred, you had an ammonia spike so you will be fine once it gets down to zero. That means the bacteria in your tank is breaking it down which is what you want to have.
I had frogspawn (which is pretty much the same as hammer) in a 12g and it got too big for the tank. The problem is it will sting anything around it and it can get a lot bigger than is looks. Ours went from one head to eight heads in less than a year. Zoas, rics, mushrooms will all be fine, I...
